I have an iphone 3GS. Over the last few days, I have been having trouble waking the phone from sleep. I have to push the home button for 3-4 seconds for the phone to wake up. When it does wake, there is a "play, forward and reverse" image with volume control displayed just beneath the clock. No music or sound is coming, just these images. Also, I can't seem to connect to my wi-fi. Also, the battery drains quickly--as if something is running in the background while the phone is sleeping.

Once I do a quick reset, it seems to work okay--only to falter after a few minutes once again.

Try restoring your iPhone in iTunes. If possible, don't restore from a back-up and set it up as a new device. This will make it a bit of a pain to set your iPhone back up with your email accounts, wi-fi networks (and will also lose saved game progress, cookies in Safari, etc.) but it will give you the "cleanest" possible set-up. If you still have problems after that, contact Apple as there might be something wrong hardware-wise with your iPhone (though it sounds software-related and a restore should fix it).

Always check the iPod isn't running when you put the iPhone to sleep. The triangle in the top right corner of the screen indicates that it is running. Swich it off by going back to the original album and navigate to the end of the last track. When that track finishes playing, the triangle will disappear, indicating the iPod is not running in the background.
