iPhone isn't updating: red badge won't change unread # when using mail.app

I've searched around for this a bunch of times and haven't found a straight answer.

Problem: I read an email on my mac using mail.app, but the red badge on my iPhone won't update. For example, if I have two unread emails on my mac and read one of them, the badge on the iPhone will remain at 2.

But when I actually open the mail application on my iPhone the application refreshes and recognizes that I've read the email. This behaviour seems more like "fetch" than it does "push."

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

I believe the only push is new mail. Everyhing else is sync.

I believe it has always been this way. Below is on the Apple Support Site.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1795

    Symptoms

Your iPhone/iPod touch may not always update when you read, delete, reply to, or move messages in MobileMe Mail, or in an email application on your Mac or PC.

    Resolution

With MobileMe, your iPhone or iPod touch is alerted when you receive a new message at your MobileMe email address.

If your MobileMe mail account is configured to use Push (in the Fetch New Data settings on your iPhone/iPod touch), your iPhone/iPod touch will automatically update to reflect the status of your MobileMe mail when:

    You receive a new message
    or
You open Mail on your iPhone or iPod touch

This is the most annoying part of MobileMe and the iPhone (for me). It makes the unread badge useless on the iPhone if you've read the message on any other device.

This happens multiple times per day to me:

Is it still saying two from the two emails I read before? Or do I have two new emails? Guess I'll have to open Mail to check...effectively defeating the entire purpose of the badge.

There's really no fix until Apple implements a sort of "push synchronization" into mobileme email.

This is how it works. There is no additional push ping for "reading" or "deleting" or "moving" an e-mail. New e-mail is the only push.

The red badge will update accordingly after the app is checked.
Remember, this is push NOTIFICATION, not push STATUS.
