iPhone Keyboard Maker 'Typo' Ordered to Pay BlackBerry $860,000

"According to Seacrest and his partner Lauren Hallier, they saw many of their friends carrying two phones -- one for typing and correspondence, presumably a Blackberry, and an iPhone for everything else."

is this because they never get out of their L.A. entertainment industry bubbles? i've literally never seen anyone ever do this, and i work in advertising on the East Coast. producers, ceos, models/talent, tech/dev... no one... ever.

Whats up with the front facing camera on the iPhone 6 placed on top of the earpiece and not next to it. and how is the camera cutout black around the lens? and only 5 rows of icons when it has 6?

- The suit has clear merit. The Typo 2 redesign is the right result.

- They lost the suit, as they should... but kept selling the infringing Typo 1 design anyway??

- BB is in the right here, regardless of whether they're thriving or not otherwise.

- There's room for physical iOS keyboard accessories to serve a niche in the market. I'm not sure this (v 1 or 2) is the answer, though.

- Nice product name.

I agree. I don't have a problem with the product either. They deserve to be fined for the infringements though.

For a lot of us, not having the apps we want to use on Android, is what keeps us off that platform. For some, the keyboard matters the most, because if you can't use it, then it defeats the purpose of having a smartphone. The reason why I haven't moved to a iPhone 6 or 6 Plus is for the fact that typing on the 5S is much easier, especially since I can't use my other hand for holding the phone and just type with my thumb - And I type A LOT.

If this is making the people buying it happy, then that's fine. Yes, there's a lot of room for someone to make a really good product. These guys are not going to make it happen though. It only takes one look at their iPad keyboard to see that they don't understand that they're up against so many other companies doing the same thing, but much better.

Well, that will keep Blackberry going a little longer.

BBRY stock up 5% on expectation that it will be their best quarterly earnings since 2007 on the back of the $840K windfall from Typo.

That $860,000 is probably the most money Blackberry will make this year.

So we all now know Blackberrys 2015 yearly profit will be exactly $860,000 ;)

Blackberry third quarter of fiscal 2014 was approximately $1.2 billion....

The Typo 2 "redesign" is a step in the right direction - it still looks like a blatant ripoff of the BlackBerry keyboard to me. Slightly rearranging the keys doesn't change the fact that the keys physically look exactly the same as on the BlackBerry complete with sloping edges.

My comment was tongue-in-cheek. I'm aware Blackberry has a ton of money but for all intents and purposes, they are no longer relevant.

Apple could make a loss of £100,000,000 for the rest of my life and not go out of business, but it doesn't protect it from becoming irrelevant if no one buys their products.

Samsung, as an example, is much more likely to become irrelevant before it finally runs out of money, even if sales continue their downward trajectory.

Covers the Touch ID? Fail!

Agreed. Because without TouchID, how are all those SF Giants fans supposed to be able to unlock their iPhones so they can send texts, check Facebook and buy apps while they are at AT&T Park "watching" the game? ;)

Reading this article made me laugh. This company ignores a court decision and not only continues to sell their existing product but comes out with a new one lmfao. Funny stuff.

The company is idiotic for not listening to the court but I find it far more ridiculous that a company can be deemed to be infringing on copyright with a device as ubiquitous as a keyboard. I mean seriously, words literally fail me.

i was given he first blackberry at work; it was a pager like thing. as the product matured i think i probably got just about every version out there. and i hated them all. when the iphone came out i got the iphone but had to keep the bb for work. Finally BYOD came out and I was finally able to ditch the BB. i was never happy with the product and the keyboard was not really an attraction for me.

typo was wrong to infringe but in the end this is a niche. i cannot imagine that too many people want to have physical keybords, especially one that covers the touch id.
