Rather like when folk would camp out overnight for the launch day of the new Call of Duty game.

Back then phones and gaming were coming on leaps and bounds with major improvements year on year. They have both now reached their potential. Whilst games can improve on graphics I cant see how else they can improve on the scale they did over the last 20yrs. Same with phones, back in the 2000's it felt like there was a race to produce the smallest phone, they where so small they had to make flip phones. Then when phones became capable of playing video their screens needed to get bigger. So we got bigger screens but thinner phones, and thinner bezels.

We now have what we have, and like gaming I can't see how phones will improve on the scale they once did.

They can, it’s just that companies don’t want to give us drastic changes year after year because everything’s about maximizing profit now. Innovation takes a backseat to everything else once they learned they can trickle stuff out once a year and people will still buy their crap.

The thing people have to understand is that Macrumors is a small section of the Apple fandom. The people that upgrade yearly are a small percentage of people in the world outside of these forums.

It's been said time and time again that for the you won't find amazing new features or innovations with yearly upgrades. That's why I encourage people to really consider stop upgrading yearly or if you choose to do that do research and don't fall into the FMO Apple marketing blitz.

What exact kind of dark magic are you expecting? It's a slab of glass that can only do so much. Do you want it to do the dishes or clean your house? Year over year it's not meant to be an OMG update, no one does that. Never have year after year. Apple has never in their history innovated frequently.
But I feel like that's also a function of Steve not being there. The 4 was such a COOL phone compared to what came before it, and what came before it was revolutionary.

I look forward to the day they launch a 30k robot that can clean my house and do chores while I “relax”. I’ll line up for that.

Steve also approved the ergonomic nightmare magic mouse they still sell which charges from the bottom.

Other than the original iphone 3g, the original Ipad, what has apple done that is all that has really innovated mobile products since? I would argue that the watch really isn't anything special and I have an Ultra. I'm not sure why people are so surprised and triggered. I don't know what the next thing is, but smart phones can only do so much...I don't see anything close to a paradigm shift in the next 10 years at least with cell phones.

This. Apple is a little slow these days but they've been about refinement rather than cutting edge for a while now. I just don't know what people are expecting from cell phones. This is coming from someone that usually has the latest iPhone and android flagship.

I was one of those nuts that stood in line for about 12 hours for the iPhone 4 launch. I was bouncing back from excitement to regret every 30 minutes or so but the payoff was glorious. At the time I already had the android flagship in hand, the HTC Evo, which was returned promptly the day after. I imagine it'll be a while, if at all, before there is that much hype for a device again.

I can't see how any phone is likely to change much over the next few years, they are now about the perfect size to have as a phone, browse the internet and watch videos on. Surely all that can be done moving forward is increase battery life & speed, and make improvements to the operating system?

If the iPhone was the Macintosh, and the iPhone X was the iMac, then the iPhone 16 Pro is the iMac (24-inch Mid 2007).

Not every release can change the world.

I would say the 15 introduced new changes to iPhone that rhe 16 just slightly improved on ( USBC, Titatium, 5X Camera, more powerful chip).

The 16 is basically the equivalent of the iPhone XS. Which really they should have called this years phones the 15S cause that's what this really is an S year.

Smartphones have generally peaked. Look at Samsung, Google, Huawei, Oppo they've barely innovated. Foldable phones are irrelevant as they carry too many inherent flaws and opens up more room for errors.

I mean considering i went 8 Plus to 11 Pro Max, then waited 5 years before getting 16 Pro Max it's inherently clear why.
Afaik never watched 12/13/14 presentations, 15 was decent however reviews of inefficient thermals put me off from getting it and meh battery life.

16 Pro Max is a huge gamechanger and a leap forward. I'd say easily can last 3-4 years, and even more if one is conscious of their budgets because I can guarantee you phones arent going to change much.

Don't think they'll use the S moniker anymore. it's disappeared since the XS[10S].
I do see the 16 Pro Max as a S moniker [15S] to the iPhone 15 Pro Max if looking at it at base values... however improved thermals, battery life leap and more video features make it a bit of an upgrade.

Completely agree.

Also, I think Camera Control will be the new thing to copy Apple on (RIP headphone jack)....when the next batch of Samsung's come out, I bet they will all have a similar dedicated "button".

I don't even know if the improved thermals of the 16 Pro Max vs. 15 Pro Max are actually a real world difference. I spent almost an entire afternoon yesterday looking into how the 16PM is fairing with it's improved thermals; as a big enough improvement here would likely be my main reasoning to upgrade from 15PM to 16PM. And 16PM owners are still getting hot phones playing games, recording videos, etc, and not really noticing any tangible differences in cooling compared to the 15PM.

My biggest takeaway was that there is probably a small difference in the 16PM running cooler, but it certainly isn't any "dramatic improvement" or reason to spend hundreds of dollars upgrading from a 15PM. And trust me, I'm always itching for a new gadget.
