I was just wondering, where is the actual lens on the back of the iPhone? I kind of doubt the circular bit part of the back plate is the lens, just a UV filter. Because if you take the back plate off, the camera still functions fine making me believe the lens is actually the blue bit under the filter.

The piece of glass on the back is just for protection, and it probably has anti-reflective coating. The actual camera module comes ready to plug in from the factory -Sony I believe in the 4S case- and has multiple lenses.

Yup, back glass is just a window for the camera to look through.
