iPhone losing the home button?

I like the no-home button, but waking up the iPad/iPod now when we want to use it would suck. Pushing the power button on the corner kinda sucks because it takes a second to adjust your hands to locate it. Perhaps make the bezels touch sensitive so we can double tap it to wake it up or slide across the bezel to wake+unlock.

But then what about cases?

My home button is actually starting to stick and sometimes I really have to mash it good for it to work.

So I am all for this.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I would love to see either the home button gone or changed to touch-sensitive (no mechanical movement). I've had a temperamental button on my iP4 that either mistakes a single click for a double or nothing at all. Very frustrating.

New ones will come out. Just like the iPad 2 will have a new case for the camera's

Yeah, but how would that work if the sides around the phone are touch sensitive? You can't really make something that'll just click on the back plate, and even then it wouldn't provide much protection.

I think that if Apple can find a good way to replace the home button, they should go for it. So many people always complain about it, and how it breaks easily. Even my girlfriend sometimes has problems with hers when it gets stuck or whatever. But if they do decide to remove the home button, I think the screen would need to be bigger for people to be able to work those gestures on the screen. I think this would work perfectly on the iPad, not so sure about the iPhone though.

As others have said - Apple will not remove the home button on the iPhone, or if they do it will be relocated to the side. It's a phone - you need to be able to use one hand!

I'm thrilled about this bit of news! My entire reason for jailbreaking was/is Activator. If Apple will just do these 2 gestures, I'm in! I wouldn't even bother jailbreaking anymore. Can't wait for the final 4.3, this is way better news than 'multi-tasking'

Has anyone considered the G4 Cube? The top of the Cube is completely smooth, but there is a power button right there in the middle of it. A very small amount of pressure is all it takes to activate the button. This could very possibly be the kind of thing Apple is considering for these devices: a physical button set under a smooth surface, perhaps with a small indent to make it easy to locate.
