FYI - 2FA also prevents anyone from sign-on to a new iOS device (Apple's 2FA) without the code verification as well. Try it.

The point being..? I'm quite happy that someone can't accidentally sign into my ios account on their new device, thanks to 2FA.

Yes you need it to add a new device to your account, for the same reason that any wrong-doer would need it to add their own device to your account. The point is it would have perfectly prevented the attack on the OP and can never be used to lock you out of your own device as you suggest.
