I'm an Apple fan and always will be (purely because of Apple v 1.0). However, this weak and abysmal MagSafe product release combined with the eco-friendly charger brick lie has made it more evident that this Apple has rolled far from the tree.

IMHO, what's worse is that Apple, being aware that its long time and most loyal customers wanted a MagSafe return on MBPs, has seemingly said "F U" and given a middle finger salute by releasing a chi charger and labeled it MagSafe even though the word "MagSafe" has nothing to do with the iPhone chi charger.

When I first saw the MagSafe headline I thought, "Wow, Apple has brought it back MagSafe!". Then you read the release and think "Naturally, this was too good to be true". やっぱりダメだ。They called it MagSafe knowing that customers have wanted a MagSafe return [+ TouchBar to go].

MagSafe was named so because it prevented people from tripping over the cable and crippling their MBPs. Sure there is a magnet, but this chi charger does not make anything safer. Just read all the forums. People are not impressed by or eager to buy this chi charger. This is pure marketing BS and so is the charger brick lie.

Aesthetically, the iP12 looks pretty good, but I'm passing on all product releases this year since they are incremental updates. Stronger glass and first-gen Lidar and gimped 5G won't do it for me. Especially with that notch. Other brands have gotten rid of the notch. I will be upgrading all devices as soon as the notch is gone which I believe will be with the iPhone 13.

Here's hoping for some real news in November.

Summary:

  • MagSafe for Mac: only charges old Macs
  • MagSafe for iPhone: only charges iPhone -- slower than wired charger
  • USB-C: charges both recent Macbooks and iDevices (with the requisite cable), sometimes very quickly

Here's my travel kit:

  • USB-C to Lightning cable
  • USB-C to USB-C cable
  • USB-A to Lightning cable
  • 30W USB-C GaN charger
  • 5W USB-A charger (like the ones Apple shipped for years)

I can fast charge my iPhone when I get to my hotel room in the late afternoon using the USB-C charger. Overnight, I can fully recharge my iPhone using the 5W USB-A charger and recharge a notebook computer (MacBook Air or a Windows ultrabook) using the other 30W charger.
