The situation.

I am currently on the Cricket network. I pay $48 a month and get unlimited text, voice and data all day everyday.

I bought an iphone and love it. I want to use it but cant afford the At&T plan.

I hear that it is possible to plug in a t-mobile sim card and use the t-mobile plan on an i-phone?

The solution.

Go to the store. Buy a t-mobile plan and a free phone. Sell the phone online and get some beer money. Plug simcard in the iphone and talk away.

Fail. You have to unlock it. If it's a 3G, you can't do that yet.

I ran the Pwnage software and am using the phone without a sim currently.

It can't. Wait until New Years' Day and, if it didn't SHIP with 2.2, you can unlock it. If it had 2.2 on it when you got it, you're still out of luck.

Unless you use TurboSIM.

Settings, General, About.

Have you done any software updates since you got it? If yes, it will say 2.2 and you should be fine. If no and it DOES say 2.2, you're out of luck.

The Dev Team 3G software unlock comes out on New Year's Day. It works on 3G iPhones that did not ship with 2.2.
