Hi I recently updated my Iphone 4 to the 4S and I wanted my daughter to be able to use my old Iphone 4 as her phone (she's only 18months old) but we use it for various apps and music. It dawned on me recently that even though it's no longer connected to a telecommunications network I can still use it to track her and her Nanny when they go on outings (as a safety measure rather than a checking up measure) the nanny knows i'm thinking of doing this. The find my iphone app still works fine but I was also thinking it would be great for the Nanny to be able to sms me and MMS me photos of what they are up to on outings... I really enjoy it when i see photos of what they've been up to. unfortunately I can't figure out how to get the iphone instant messaging function to work but i thought it would be able to because it used to receive my iphone messages after i update phones even though it was no longer on a tel com network. is this because it's still attached to my old phone id and number? I've renamed it through itunes but I'm thinking I need to do something else, like perhaps a new apple user id????

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

u can use the iMessages of the iphone by making a differnt Apple ID for your Daughter.

when u can track the Nany and Daughter, then they can send you any picture with the help of iMessages over the internet. that would be a good option.

other wise for the MMS, ask the carrier for the setings. hope this might help :)

Cool thanks for that info. I've created a new apple id for my daughter but for some reason it just won't send or receive sms/imessages. Can you or anybody else help me figure out what else I have to do to make the imessages work? Im starting to think that I can't do it without a phone number attached, but how do ipods send imessages?

Thanks again for your help peeps

you dont really need a phone number attached to it. you can simply use the ID in the iMessages. go to settings>iMessages and turn them. over in the reciver ID place the Apple u made and the mesages should show activated rather than saying waiting for activation.

excellent, that was the missing link, thanks very much for your help mate.

This is quite a relief for me so thanks again.

ok everything was working perfectly until I tried to use my daughters iphone whilst we were out shopping and it wouldn't send messages. It works fine whilst it's at home and accessing the home wireless internet router but once it's out of range of that router it doesn't work, is that what you would expect? Is that how ipods work when they send imessages? If that's how it works then i won't be able to use that iphone for the purpose i had hope to, i'll have to purchase a telcom account which sucks :(

any help peeps?

You will new Internet to send messages and use find my iPhone. You could probably have the iPhone unlocked and just use a prepaid sim?
