It's a shame, sometimes I feel a smaller phone is better. I just picked up a used iPhone 6 to use as my BlueBubbles iMessage phone number and I can't believe how much more portable and svelte it feels over my dinosaur clunker 13 pro max. Oh well, I already have my "mini" in my Fold 4.

Yup! Apple's calling a "normal size"* phone as a "mini" is similar to how they hide Jony-Ive-era-minimalist-crap common-sensical readability features like Bold Font, Increase Contrast, Button Shapes, etc., under the "Accessibility" menu area on iPhone, iPad, etc.

*I realize that my "normal" is different than others' "normal" when it comes to what's considered to be a "normal sized phone," but whenever a base model phone can't be easily put into the front pocket of Jeans or the pocket of a typical men's dress shirt without being fully conscious it's there, then it would sure seem that it's not a "normal size" for a "mobile" phone.

Wow, beautifully said. Especially the part about “normal” things (Auto-Brightness, anyone?) being hidden away in Accessibility. Can’t use my iPhone or iPad without Reduce Transparency/Reduce Motion/Button Shapes/Bold Text/Increase Contrast enabled.

Those prices for an iPhone 12 mini are insanely high.

High? I don't think so. Very VERY few items that the iPhone 12 mini cannot do that iOS 15.7/16.0.1 offer in Software. Value is value and with only 2 options for the mini, Apple knows this. Let's just hope Apple is using the higher resale fees as R&D for a better mini at 5.4" to debut later.

I see nobody complaining about refurb pricing on Xr, 11/11 P/11PM or 12/12P/12PM devices, hmmmm.

The 5.4-inch iPhone "mini" size was originally introduced in 2020 with the debut of the iPhone 12 mini, which was greeted with much fanfare for its compact size. The device was followed by last year's iPhone 13 mini, a largely incremental update. Apple still sells both models on its main store page, but despite the smaller devices' clear popularity among enthusiasts, Apple has deemed the form factor to be not popular enough to make a new iteration for the third year running.
It remains to be seen whether Apple will decide to continue offering brand new iPhone mini models after it launches its next-generation flagship iPhone 14 series, and given its successor model has yet to be listed in Apple's refurb store, the returning availability of refurbished iPhone 12 mini units is likely to be noteworthy for consumers who favor the smaller size.

Apple began selling certified refurbished ‌iPhone 12 mini‌ devices in July of this year – a full 21 months after they were originally launched – but demand has made them hard to get hold of for the last several weeks after news of their imminent demise in Apple's upcoming new flagship range.

Tim Cook and the executives of the iPhone lineup REALLY needs to see this!
Personally, imho, I think the lack of functionality in the iPhone 14 Plus will not have that model sell any more than either the 12/13 mini did. If this turns out to be fact, Apple really needs to look at their lineup a LOT better.

Funny how the SE OG (an iPhone 5s size + Acpu, RAM, storage options), the SE 2 an iPhone 6S/7 (again with CPU, RAM, and storage options; being the same really), and the SE 2 (yet again with cpu, RAM, colour and storage options) is 'OK' for Apple to keep, but the mini no - when neither mini was EVER nor properly advertised by Apple.

Apple should rid themselve's of TouchID on devices. It's contradictory to their FaceID being more secure, just like when the 5S & 5C launched in the same presentation, Apple mentions recycling yet 'unapologetically plastic' with a British accent sold the 5c.

So you can buy a used iPhone 12 mini for $170 less than a brand new one when it came out almost two years ago? What a steal!
Again ... what can the 12 mini NOT do in iOS that the 13 mini can?

Hardware:
FaceID gen 2/3 - slightly faster, barely noticeable each time you use it.
Battery - is larger along with a CPU more efficient in the 13 mini
  • Sensor-shift optical image stabilization for video
  • Smart HDR 4 for photos
  • Photographic Styles
  • Dolby Vision HDR video recording up to 4K at 60fps
  • Cinematic mode video recording with shallow depth of field (1080p at 30 fps)
(EDITED hardware differences to be accurate vs perceived).

Software:
Hmmm. Nothing really. Yeah absolutely nothing.
Does this affect value - no not 1 bit, not until iOS starts to no longer support the 12 mini and only the 13mini as the minimum device. Until then it's still a great device - but for both I do recommend a MagSafe compatible battery extender for a long daily use, where 6hr+ talk time or more is needed.

We all know it’s going to live on as the SE.

Fam & fellow countryman, we all WISH this to happen, but I'm not so certain it will, not for the next 2-3yrs.

If Ross Young is correct, it's likely the Xr frame will be used - if so two major things will occur:
Rounded smooth sides doesn't fit the existing iPhone hardware design of the last 2yrs :(
6.1 inches screen, this could - even with TouchID on sleep/wake side button will impact iPhone 14, 13, and any 12 sales (retail, online or refurb) on Apple's site.

Other findings:
Weight will be significantly heavier as more aluminum than the SE/12-13mini. Significantly heavier by 50 grams: 144 g (5.08 oz)/ 194 g (6.84 oz)!
- iPhone 12/13 mini respectively (135 g (4.76 oz)/ 141 g) are BOTH
Height significantly taller model if it'll use Xr frame : 150.9mm vs 138.4 ( iPhone 12/13 mini's are 131.5 in height by comparison).

Screen resolution goes up:
SE3: 750 x 1334 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~326 ppi density), Xr : 828 x 1792 pixels (~326 ppi density) Density of pixels being the same - not ideal on a larger screen as it'll be LESS sharp!
- iPhone 12/13 mini's have 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~476 ppi density)

A-Series chip:
Both the SE3 and the 13 mini have the same Apple A15 Bionic (5 nm) chip having
Hexa-core (2x3.22 GHz Avalanche + 4x1.82 GHz Blizzard). This is significantly faster than the iPhone 12 mini's
Apple A14 Bionic (5 nm) having Hexa-core (2x3.1 GHz Firestorm + 4x1.8 GHz Icestorm). Trying both mini's I could tell a substantial and noticeable different in iOS 15.4 launching & running Island War game on each, especially when zooming in on battles of 260 characters on the field. This is NOT an intensive game, just rending individual polygons pushed limits - with minimal apps frozen in background.

Now I'm not certain if TSMC/Hon-Hai have the Xr molds still in stock, so it only makes sense Apple goes with the A15+ chip in a 5.4" screen iPhone 13 mini for the upcoming iPhone SE 3 for late spring 2023, removing the 13 mini from sales stock by then. This could also mean economies of scale using the 2nd gen FaceID to the SE lineup along with a much sharper screen, more displayed on the screen due to the higher pixel count and for those that scream for the TouchID Button - accessiblity has that solution for you for over a decade now. Just my thoughts and findings.

Chill out. Nobody is saying the iPhone 12 mini isn’t a capable phone. That’s just not a good price for a used one when they’re that old.

Chill out? Oh I’m super chill, just very factual in my assessment. Since you don’t see nor agree with the value of the 12/13 mini at it’s retail price, means you’re either not the target market for this product/series or the price is not something for your pallet; maybe both. Doesn’t mean it isn’t for others. Chill should be something you need to swallow/take the chill-pill. ;)

All cheekiness aside, at launch and comparatively … both the 12 / 13 mini is of value to the target market they’re made and meant for.

Top shelf specs for the same phone as the regular 12 or 6.1” 12 Pro except:

Comparing the pro:
Extra GPU cores (2 I believe),
Pro camera missing - Portrait and focal lens and arpegiaré on said camera
Larger screen
Battery size and capacity (with Pro and regular iPhone).

It’s not supposed to be a pro and comparatively on all tests for intensive cpu use, it compares very well against the regular iPhone 12/13 respectively.

The 13 mini gets the wide angle camera and lens of the 12 Pro btw.

Oh check out the attachment specifically comparing the 12 Pro btw.

I really don’t feel like arguing this back and forth. A brand new 13 mini is $600, so $70 less for the previous model that’s also been used and refurbished is just not a good deal. If you want to pay that much for a 2+ year old used phone, nobody is stopping you, but it’s still not a good deal. Especially not when I can go to Verizon’s website right now and buy a brand new iPhone 12 mini for $500.

It’s a 1 yr old phone - 13 mini (2021-2022).

Also enjoy the lower battery life that is significant either the 12 mini - and not improved wide angle camera. I’m surprised you’re not complaining of the 12 mini being too expensive via Verizon. You debated so you must’ve felt the need for back/forth but just a perception even how wrong or right it may be. Personally with the 14 Pro I felt that didn’t add enough value on the 3rd iteration of this design but that’s my opinion that suits my choice. Each to their own others may see better value comparative to the 13 Pro others may not.

Where do I even start? Is English not your first language? I don’t mean that as an insult. I’m just trying to figure out how you completely misunderstood my last post, especially considering some of your sentences don’t even make sense. Let me break it down…

It’s a 1 yr old phone - 13 mini (2021-2022).

I didn't say the 13 mini is a 2+ year old phone. I said the 13 mini is $600, and the model before that (meaning the 2+ year old 12 mini) that’s been used and refurbished is only $70 less than the 13 mini.

Also enjoy the lower battery life that is significant either the 12 mini - and not improved wide angle camera.

What does this even mean? That made no sense.

I’m surprised you’re not complaining of the 12 mini being too expensive via Verizon.

Why does that surprise you? $500 is exactly what a new 2-year old iPhone that was originally $700 should cost. $100 off for every year it is old.

This is what you’re not understanding. The iPhone 13 mini starts at $630 for the unlocked, SIM-free model. The 12 mini was listed on Apple’s refurbished site for $630 minus a $100 discount for being refurbished. So Apple is basically saying a new iPhone 12 mini should be the same price as a new iPhone 13 mini.

This is what the SIM-free pricing should look like:

iPhone 13 mini new - $630
iPhone 13 mini refurb - $530
iPhone 12 mini new - $530
iPhone 12 mini refurb - $430

$530 is what a brand new iPhone 12 mini should cost, therefore the iPhone 12 mini on Apple’s refurbished site is overpriced.

Personally with the 14 Pro I felt that didn’t add enough value on the 3rd iteration of this design but that’s my opinion that suits my choice. Each to their own others may see better value comparative to the 13 Pro others may not.

How does the 13 Pro and 14 Pro have anything to do with what we were talking about? That’s a whole different category of iPhone. I really feel like you think I’m attacking the iPhone 12 mini. I’m not. I have one that I’ve had since the first day it came out and I love it. All I’m saying is $530 for a refurbished one is too much. A year ago, that would have been a good price, but that’s how much a refurbished 13 mini should cost now.

To ask if English is someone else’s first language or not is the intent of being insulting.

Let me guide you to the quote you’re questioning.
First this thread is “mini’s” bother the 12 and the 13.
Secondly you specifically mentioned the 13 mini in your paragraph at the beginning.

Third you stated a complete thought in an entire sentence within “If you want to pay that much for a 2+ year old used phone, nobody is stopping you, but it’s still not a good deal.”

The subject in context had not yet changed. This means you are talking still about the iPhone 13 mini.

The very next sentence states , “Especially not when I can go to Verizon’s website right now and buy a brand new iPhone 12 mini for $500.” Only here do you mention the 12 mini and in direct comparison.

All of this is in a single quote. When you begin a paragraph with a subject that remains the focus until otherwise clearly stated/changed. You only clarified to compare the 13 mini with the 12 mini. Yet my English is in question here? Hmm

Yes one paragraph I made was terrible didn’t make sense. I was super tired and should’ve waited before posting but ppl make mistakes.

A pricing on Apples site for a refurbished model (which is 2 yes old, the 12 mini), is a reflection of a repaired unit, not an entirely new unit, part by part. You’re inferring Apple is staying the 12 & 13 mini are the same price - yet clearly Apple is listing them differently. At the time of your post the 13 mini still was not listed on Apple.cons site as refurbished. At the time of this threads article still was not listed in refurbished - I did check. This article was prematurely stating “mini’s”

Btw, Verizon’s listing is specific to them increasing the subsidy of products in stock. It’s likely Apple has allowed a cheaper payment for older stock, allowing Verizon to reduce sale price to sell. We don’t really know and listing 1 carrier seems to be cherry picking.

Like many you see a product by size and price alone. You don’t see the upgraded components between the 12 mini vs 13 mini. You don’t see the value to you. That’s fine. The only facts we’re debating, or should be, is pricing, differences in the hardware. What it seems we’re debating is it different view points of opinion of the products.

Last weekend I took a 38km road bike ride on major/side streets and trails. I worked track pants for ease of movement and comfort. Never once did I have to worry about the weight, the size nor the capability of taking pictures or using my 13 mini for calls, while mapping my ride. All while carrying 40lbs on my back and while sick with a nasal cold. No close proximity to anyone.

To me the iPhone 13 mini, along with my Apple Watch S8 created value and it works for me. It has value to many others on the board beyond the $ price you’re not agreeing with.

It’s ok you don’t believe the iPhone 13 mini worth a certain price (or the 12 mini’s launch price) that others do believe it’s worth. That’s what you’re not getting, I get the price comparisons but this isn’t basic food we’re it has the same needs/values to everyone. How you use your phone and it’s features differs from mine and mine differs from others.

The pictures on the 13 mini’s main camera are worlds better than I took on my 12 mini thanks to the better camera sensor and lenses from the 12 Pro. I’ll leave it at that.

Woah, I am not reading all of that. I read the first four sentences and realized you just don’t pay attention, so it’s not worth my time.

If you go back to the original post, the screenshot shows only refurbished iPhone 12 minis for sale. This thread has only ever been about refurbished iPhone 12 minis for sale. I only mentioned the 13 mini to support my argument on why the price of the refurbished 12 minis was such a bad deal. If you still can’t understand that, there’s nothing more anybody can do to help you. Have a nice day.

You really cannot admit when you're wrong can't you?

Here is your original post when began our debat (unedited).

Exact quotes from the post you just quoted:

“A brand new 13 mini is $600”

“$70 less for the previous model that’s also been used

“If you want to pay that much for a 2+ year old used phone”

“That much” meaning $70 less than $600.

How do you not understand this? How could you possibly think me saying “a 2+ year old USED phone” is referencing “a BRAND NEW iPhone 13 mini” and not the “previous model that’s also been USED?”

You still don’t get it.

13 mini is not a 2yr old phone lmao. You mixed your sentences. The 12 mini is a 2yr old phone. You’re not getting that lmao. Yet you denied saying it.

Form your sentences and paragraphs properly.

Learn basic reading comprehension. I just broke it down for you in the simplest way I could and you still can’t understand.

One year later, I wonder if the 13 Mini will be back in the refurbished store before the 15’s release. Long live the mini form factor. Shame it seems it isn’t coming to the SE
