iPhone Minimum Focal Distance?

Does anyone have a technical reason why the 12 Pro Max has a much greater minimum focal distance that the previous phones? The 11 Pro Max is about 2.5", the 12 is about 5-6". Very frustrating.

I think its because of the bigger sensor size.
