Just thought you'd guys would find this story interesting.

I was going to a local pizza place to pick up some pizza and wings to have with my family. I happened to go out in sweatpants, that I forgot have pretty crappy pockets. After placing the food on my passenger seat, I got into my car and as I closed my car door, I feel it hit something very hard. Before I even looked, I figured out that my phone fell out of my pocket and into/toward the doorjamb as the door was shutting. I yelled "G** DA** IT!!!!!" and opened my door and grabbed it and threw it on top of the pizza.

The whole ride home all I could think was "The only major complaint I've heard about the 17 pro is its durability is sub-par."(being aluminum)

When I got home, I took my phone and pulled it out of the case. The glass screen protector was crushed on the very bottom edge, and not even that bad. Not one ding, dent, chip, nothing on the phone itself.

Gotta say, the protection I used on my phone did their job, especially the screen protector. I also think I got lucky that being that the screen protector was damaged at the bottom of my phone and nowhere else that the timing was very lucky. I could have folded that thing in half!!

My only worry is that when I replace the screen protector that the glass underneath may be damaged. But I have a good feeling about it.,

My old iPhone 6+, I had a screen protect on it at some point. But I don't use cases and after this incident I don't use screen protectors either.

Same situation, getting in the car. Only my phone was in my hand and I wasn't paying attention. And it didn't get stuck in the door. Hit the asphalt on the top right corner.

The screen protecter did an absolute fantastic job of protecting itself. The point of impact was just right outside the edge of the protector and the entire screen spidered from there. No damage to the screen protector!

I used that screen protector to keep my fingers safe until I could replace the screen.

That's an odd story - I've broken a screen protector or two before, and the screen stayed pristine - but never shattered the screen underneath while the screen protector was undamaged! Now I think I've heard it all. Bucket list complete.

i know the feel. i had a Galaxy Note 10 Lite that fell onto asphalt when i was trying to put it in pocket, and it hit the ground in such an angle that the protect remained safe and the screen broke hehe

Ouch. When the iPhone 5 came out my wife slammed it in the car door as it slipped off her lap. I do have a photo of it somewhere with the top of the phone ripped wide open lol. That was the only iPhone related insurance claim we've made in 17 years.

I'm of the opinion that as a PROTECTOR, a screen protector is useless. Anything that wouldn't break the screen with a protector in place, won't break it without a protector. And anything that would break it, a thin piece of glass isn't going to make any difference.

There are other reasons for a "Screen protector" e.g. preventing scratches which.... yeah, I suppose there's some validity. But you just end up with a phone with a crappy-looking screen protector over it so I'm not sure really what the point is of it 🤔 unless you're going for resale value. Personally I trade my phone to Apple every few years and minor scratching doesn't affect the value but maybe if you're doing private resale there's a benefit.

I just am not willing to put up with the ugly protector for a year (or years) in exchange - but you do you.
