I have a 4gb 1st gen iphone, when i turn on the wi-fi the little wheel just keeps spinning and no networks show up. There was 1 time that it detected my wireless network, i proceeded to type in the password but when i pressed "join" the network disappeared. But my dad has an iPhone and all the networks within range show up. It is jailbroken. I'm not sure if this is related but the time on the lock screen is also off sometimes. When you press the sleep/wake button you can see the time changing to catch up to the correct time.

I'm having the exact same problem with a new iphone just purchased yesterday. It has 2.1 version, 16gig.

I have a new 3G and I did have a few problems connecting to my wifi. There are several posts like this & the most common problem is being sure you have all of the correct settings for your router and entering everything correctly.

I have the SSID blocked and WAP2 security mode along with a weird password. I had to go into my router settings & write all this down and carefully enter it on the iPhone. I was able to get the connection working almost immediately.

This seems to be becase of the way your newtoek was configured more than the phone. ie Of course you have to manually enter the settings for a non-brodcast network. It's the whole point.

I'd furst mae sure that you are trying to connect to an open network.

(i.e create a new one that you'll olny keep while your resolving your problems.) Then download on of the nurmours Apps that provide WiFi info.

I must say that it is odd if your Dad's phoen an detect non-hidden networks that yours can't.
