I currently have an iPhone 3G and am due for an upgrade at the end of this month, but need some advice as I have two options.

    1) The first being that I hold onto my iPhone 3G until the new iPhone is released and then upgrade to that.
    2) Secondly, upgrade to the iPhone 3GS now and get the new iPhone when it is released.

The reason I'm double minded is because if I hold out for the new iPhone (4G or whatever), will I be required to pay for the phone (despite being eligible for an upgrade)? And if i upgrade to the 3GS now, will I be able to upgrade again on the same contract?

Also, would you recommend that I wait for the new iPhone?

    Thanks.

Or, alternatively, would you suggest a Blackberry (probably not the best question to ask on a Apple forum, but I'm sure many of you have Blackberry's)?

To my mind, the iPhone is the best phone on the market at the moment, bar none. This is to a large extent due to the extensive range of apps available and the manner in which everything syncs nicely with my Mac through MobileMe etc. To that end, I can't see myself ever switching away from the iPhone, at least given the alternatives available on the market at the moment and the disappointment that Android has so far turned out to be.

As far as upgrades are concerned, as your contract is up, according to previous upgrade procedures from O2, you should be eligible for a free upgrade. I for example got a free upgrade from the 8GB 3G to the 16GB 3GS on a 24 month contract. According to previous timetables, the 4th revision of the iPhone should be available from this summer and I have been advising my family and friends who are in a similar position to wait for the new phone to be released. I guess it just depends on your desire to upgrade but the differences between the 3G and 3GS are frankly marginal (compass, faster, voice control) and I would think very hard before tying yourself into another long contract when a new, more exciting device could well be a matter of months away.

Cheers chrisblore ... you make some very interesting and valid points. I myself also thought that I should indeed wait for the new iPhone, but I was being pursuaded by a friend of mine who has recently brought a 3GS to upgrade.

I think I will wait for the new phone as your last point about tying myself to another long term contract with the release of a new, more exciting device really hit the nail on the head.

Thanks for your advice, it has been much appriciated.
