I think this is related to software.

I'm after any advice about what to do to make it stop. Will a hard reset sort it out (hasn't seemed to but hard to tell). If anyone knows a way to stop it is appreciate it. I can't remember my phone ever running hot from normal use

Are you using it while it is charging?

    7. On 10.2.1

I've closed all apps (which I never do). I'll see if that helps

Unless I'm missing something, it's not really unusual for the device to get a bit warm at some point during the charging process.

My phone usually has no noticeable increase in temp.

Interestingly my electric toothbrush was on its charger and warm too.. might be something an electrician could shed light on

Many background tasks are active during charging: icloud backup, synicng photos, system maintenance tasks, indexing, downloading and installing app updates and ios updates, face recognition, and probably couple of other things. Those tasks require CPU (and GPU - for face recognition) and wireless connectivity (especially with low WIFI signal) and, with extra heat being added from charging battery itself, can make your battery hot. If the battery is too hot - your phone will stop charging, and if it doesn’t help - it will shut itself down.

I think there is nothing to worry about.

As mentioned above, plugging your phone into the charger starts tasks that otherwise dont run to preserve battery. icloud backup, photos backup, etc.

Also, if you're using a higher rated charger (such as the one from an ipad), it provides more amperage to the phone, charging it faster, but also adding a little bit of heat.

    Nothing to worry about.

A device will get warm when charging. I notice mine gets warm if I charge it from less than 50% (I assume it's just charging faster). May depend on your case or no case to if you notice or how warm it gets. I'm using the Apple Leather case.

Additionally, I would add I noticed last night while it was charging (I was previewing songs with Apple Music) and it got warm enough it started slowing down. A little annoying but I rather it slow down the processing / download speeds / anything else than hurt the battery.

Try to activate airplane mode while charging. See if it will change anything.
