Apple is a master at marketing and the public will buy anything from them. It's a simple reflection of market dynamics.

The American public in particular are not picky, they'll take it no matter how long Apple recycles the look, feel and function.

As far as "the next big thing" Apple left that concept in the rear view mirror. You can't blame them, they are getting more than enough money to keep them happy.

They have no reason to make bold advances. Baby steps is all it takes.

It's absolutely on it's way out! As soon as Apple isn't on top, there's no reason for them to continue. Just like when Apple IS on top, all other companies stop producing cell phones. Why else do you think you only have 1 option (not counting black/white & 16/32/64) to choose from when you get a new cell phone? I really can't imagine some other company taking Apple's spot. Could you imagine the confusion if people had to choose between Apple products and those made by a different company? That wouldn't be pretty at all.

No, our current system of a single cell phone manufacturer is really the only sane way for the market to operate. Don't you think if consumers wanted choices we'd already be seeing phones from a wide variety of manufacturers running your choice of OS coming in a wide variety of form factors?

Just my opinion of course! Take it with a grain of salt, but I DO believe you're on to something here.

Is it on its way out? That is up to Apple. Will they freshen things up? I don't know. Fact is, there are plenty of VERY viable options out there now.

While I do agree ios is stale, apple is completely stubborn about things that should be standard in 2013, and appalled that we can't even so much as customize text bubble colors, I certainly do not think iphone is anywhere near dead.

Apple seems to have been somewhat exposed recently though, with heavy competition, which is a great thing. I hope apple will grow up a bit and become less stubborn and arrogant in certain issues, and they will thrive.

With all the new and inventive phones coming out do you think apple will be able to keep up? How many more years of the iPhone do we have ahead of us. I can't imagine not having the choice between android and apple.

People will still fall for the iPhone for it's familiarity and popularity.

If theres one company that can innovate, it's Apple. Just because they don't toss in a bunch of features just for the heck of it, doesn't mean they can't. They're not really known for that anyways. Apple is plenty capable of doing things above and beyond.

In my opinion, no, I don't think Apple or the iPhone will be going anywhere in the near future.

^ This.

Let's be real folks - say Samsung/Android takes a momentary lead in the mobile space. Who here really honestly thinks that will last long? They have done nothing but copy Apple, and give way to slight modifications and superfluous upgrades.

It may be a year, two years, five years, whatever, but Apple is the company that innovates. There may slight periods of incremental (i.e. not revolutionary) innovation, but over the long haul, bet on the horse in Cupertino.

Nobody else has shown they can do it quite like Apple.

In fact, I bet Tim Cook was smiling as he was watching the Samsung debut earlier this week. All those useless bells and whistles reek of trying too hard.

I don't think iPhone is on its way out but Apple needs to mature iOS by adding some features that more tech savvy users would appreciate.

I would like to have the ability to share information from one app to another. I would like to attach any kind of file to an email. I would like to set my own default apps. These would be a good start but I'm not holding my breath.

While the "average" user may not care about these features, the blogs and media would eat it and declare the iPhone as "back on top". Not that it was ever not on top, but perception is more important than facts.

Why didn't you write this at the beginning of what you wrote so i wouldn't have to have bothered reading the whole comment.

Or, you could just switch to the platform that you feel is eating Apple's lunch, since clearly they have something better in your opinion.

For the record, I don't think Android is necessarily better. I think Apple just isn't as intriguing anymore.

iPhone owners are closet jealous. In the open, the iPhone is the best phone. When we are by ourselves, it's, "Damn that galaxy is sexy!"

It's because we've been spoiled. Apple is playing the long game - be patient.

I recently got a used Nexus 4 out of curiosity. I'm using it as a secondary device next to my 4S and it's been a pretty interesting experience. There's a lot I could say about the differences between the two phones, but the main point for me that really makes me love the Nexus and think of the iPhone as slightly antiquated is the basic home screen concept. Apple's app-centric and mostly static home screen (or Springboard, if you will) was awesome in 2007 because it was much prettier, easier to use and snappier than the competition's offerings. It became even more awesome in 2008 when Apple introduced the app store and one could easily download and install applications that actually added a ton of value to the device. I'd had a smartphone before the iPhone came out, but I never bothered installing 3rd party apps - too complicated, often didn't work, added little value... etc.

However, we're all used to our smartphones being awesome little pocket computers now. Personally, I'm getting more and more interested in UI paradigms that aren't app-centric, but information-centric. And that, I think, is by far the most significant difference between iOS and Android ("openness" and "customizability" are important too, but mostly to nerds) and it's the one difference Apple might have to do something about. When I unlock the iPhone, I'm presented with a mostly static app launcher. Springboard offers very little glanceable information: There's the time, the network and battery status, the date, and tiny notification badges on some apps that tell me nothing except that these apps wish to tell me something. I can customize the arrangement of the apps and the background - and that's pretty much it. As soon as I actually want to do something or find out what those notification badges are about, I have to launch an app. Again, this is not a bad design; it's served Apple well and it was revolutionary a few years back. I do think, however, that it's starting to become a bit of a burden. Why can't I customize my home screen to display information that is important TO ME, like, say, the weather, 3-5 unread mails or messages, the next few appointments in my calendar, my twitter feed... Whatever. I can only speak for myself, but having to launch separate apps to glean all of these pieces of information gets old really fast. And it's not just the apps, it's settings too - I have to delve into submenus to toggle Wifi or Bluetooth.

On the Nexus, this plays out in a way that I consider to be more productive and, to be honest, intuitive (ugh, you know something's weird when I consider Android to offer more ease of use than iOS). When I unlock the phone, I'm greeted by a home screen that offers me access to my most used apps (in the dock), to the rest of my apps via the app button, but above all: to a host of glanceable, live-updating information that I can actually customize. I unlock my Nexus and I immediately see widgets displaying my inbox, my calendar and the local weather. If I get bored of these widgets or if I discover that other scraps of information might be more useful to me, I can just replace them.

Apart from all the other relevant distinctions between the two operating systems, apart from all their respective strengths and weaknesses, THIS to me is the key difference - the screen as a personal canvas that displays the information of my choosing (Android) or as a rather rigid app launcher. I'm not saying one is necessarily better than the other; it's a matter of taste. Personally, I prefer the Android paradigm, but I'll still probably sell my Nexus again because I'm just too locked into Apple's ecosystem. I merely wish to point out that this is a very significant factor in these debates about iOS feeling "stale" and that Apple might ultimately have to do something to allow us to really make the home screen our "home". This is not about silly widgets and live wallpapers, it's about empowering the user to actually get the most out of a portable, always-connected device.

Tyrion, that was a nice write-up.

I don't think apple users are asking for total combustibility - but yes, we would like some live updating info on our home screen. And let us change colors please. This is 2013.

I really believe that if apple's app store wasn't excellent, which it is, then they would really be struggling by now. It is what keeps me from bigger-screened, more customized phones. I'm going to give the ios 7 and 5S announcement a try to see if apple has picked up on its customer base wanting a bit more.

Did you watch the S4 release? I'll take Apple's keynote presentations over that anytime. Thanks for the rerun Post about iPhone owners are sheep.

Someone sounds insecure.

At _No_ time did I label people like myself, iPhone Owners, Sheep.

Check my posts & you'll see how I happen to truly enjoy mine. I've specifically noted I don't find it boring or stale as some claim iOS to be.

I have but one desire, a larger display. Period. I'm sorry to hear you're unhappy.

My feelings are not attached to any device :D

I hate these stupid (see title) threads. They serve no useful purpose whatsoever. Just more blah blah blah from all camps.

Buy what you like. Everyone else will do the same.

Really? Another of these threads! There are already hundreds of the exact same threads available for you to coat-tail on. Many with new and improved voting/polling...

Come one, that's how people measure worth now.... how many people we can get to follow us or respond to us on the interwebs. This guy is just trying to up his cred!

Android phones are insecure, too much malware and spyware.

When they build a secure OS then we could compare an android phone to an iphone.

as an avid Apple fan and a critic of Apple over the last couple of years when it comes to mobile, I salute you!

I voted with my wallet after iPhone 5 came out. Bought it to try it for myself and after about 10-15 days gave it to my SO and got a Note 2 (It would've been 2 iphone 5s for us). I have to say that Apple has not innovated enough. As much crap and jokes that I make about Samsung's drug induced s4 presentation, Samsung is doing some potentially really neat things with their software.

I hope Apple wakes up and smell the coffee on several fronts:

1) bigger phones - and maybe even smaller phones, for those of us with manly hands and those of us with 3 inch hands. - make it like the rest of apple hardware lines
2) notifications - please for the love of god.
3) deeper integration with 3rd party services (give users the power, hide it 10 levels deep in settings if needed, but let us power users the options of setting default apps)
4) widgets
5) real multi-tasking

We users should demand better from Apple, especially those of us that also invested in the company.

Hey, fellow iOS fans!!!!

Stop defending the staleness of the iPhone. We're starting to look like Crackberry forums back in 2009!!

The iPhone is stale man. Lets own up to it and demand something better vs defending it and allowing Apple die a slow death.

Apple has determined that it can no longer compete with Android devices. Thus on July 1st, all ios devices will be disabled by Apple as it will be required to sell off the company for pennies on the dollar. These silly threads, silly silly uninformative threads.

apples latest phone has a dual core processor-2.4ghz total
samsung's latest has an octo core processor -approx 12ghz total
apple doesnt play hardware game they are all about software. Apples desktops are very expensive, you can get a better performing computer designed by an individual user for one third the cost with windows. Iphone will never be on its way out, simply because not everyone is a tech savvy individual.

I truly do not understand how many people live this product. It is getting old and stale at this point. You read about all the what ifs and stuff like that. Well ios 7 will be released soon and it's still junk. This BIG announcement, come on REALLY. Look at what ios 7 is offering,it us still behind android, and thus is the big yearly update all you people look forward to? Android has it issues as well, but now at least the fluidity and flow is just about flawless. Forget about Samsung s4 , HTC one blows it away. I tried the iPhone 5 to see what all the hype wad about,I bought my wife one,she loves it,androidis too complicated for her. Me on tthe other hand, lasted about abweek, sold it on eBay,picked up LG optimus g. Now have the HTC ONE,and couldn't ask for more, except for better network, sprint is horrible, but hey ,it's free, job pays for my service. I just dont think they are doing a good job at "keeping up",and will never understand the followers.
