hi,

i am on orange mobile network in the uk and have heard various rumours and read various threads that O2 may lose their exclusivity on the iphone in the UK this year and orange may be the next best favourite as a carrier.

does anyone know if this rumour holds any weight as my contract on orange is up at the end of next month and need to make a decision on switching network or holding tight?

thanks

i read somewhere that they may lose the exclusivity because they didn't meet their sales quota and because orange is the carrier in france....

And T-Mobile is the carrier in Germany, yet T-Mobile US doesn't have it.

Your logic is flawed.

Definatly not happening,

I work for Orange, not low down but fairly high up, and unlike US networks, we're actually informed of new handsets up to 3 months before their announced/released, and there has been nothing mentioned of this happening.

Not to burst your bubble or insult, but I highly doubt you'd be informed unless you were extremely high up

A direct replacement? I highly doubt it. Anyone with an iPhone atm would be forced to move networks if they wish to upgrade when their contract runs out. That's not cool and I hope the regulator would have something to say about it.

An expansion to Orange? Possibly, although this supposed 5 year exclusivity deal seems to put water on it (metaphorically and, what the hell, a physical iPhone too!). There probably is a get-out clause in the contract, but it'd cost Apple a LOT of money, and some PR too.

then maybe orange may become an additional supplier of the iPhone G3, but i highly doubt it!

Interesting... For me, if 02 allow tethering with 3.0 at no extra cost, I will be a happy man.

I think you'll be disappointed then. Not only do O2 explicitly forbid tethering with any of their phones (and most physically support it), they won't even sell you a bolt on for tethering.

Their policy is a simple option of buying a USB dongle on a separate plan if you want to tether

Soon see hey

I found this link the other day. It was posted on the Iphoneblog.com at the beginning of May.

Updated: To address some of the comments, we edited out the URL field to protect the source, but it was not the public facing web address mentioned below. It was local intranet address. Of course, anything is fake-able, so we’ll just have to wait and see if — ever — Apple and Orange UK make an announcement… or not.

Seems strange to be writing about iPhone 3G launches when there are so many next-generation iPhone rumors flying around now, doesn’t it? Then again, there have been rumors about Orange UK getting the iPhone going back to the early days of iPhone 3G. Now, however, a helpful tipster has stumbled across what might be the first step towards confirmation:

iPhone 3G has shown up on internal systems at Orange UK (see the above pic), something that typically happens 6-8 weeks before a handset starts shipping on the network.

O2 has been exclusively carrying the iPhone in the UK since just after the original iPhone was first released, but competition is a Good Thing, right?

Any of our UK mates think iPhone on Orange is brilliant, yeah?

By the way this is my first post and would like to say great forum and rumors on all apple products!:D

A lot of networks support the iPhone, even if it's not officially available on their network. Engadet had some stuff about T-Mobile US apologising for a voicemail blackout recently to their iPhone customers, and saying they would fix it.

You can ring Orange and ask for the settings for your unlocked iPhone and they will tell you them.

I really hope Orange get to sell iPhones

O2's network is so rubbish that I cannot even get edge network let alone 3G :mad:
Whereas Orange and Three both have 3G in my area.

So there was no reason to upgrade to the 3G phone when it came out. (except GPS).

My contract runs out soon so please please be true!

Have you got a 3G sim card or an old one?

I went to an Orange shop in London last week to find out when my contract was up.

I chatted with the girl in the shop and she told me that Orange were 'in negotiations' over the iPhone.

But for all we know, every UK network could be chatting to Apple over releasing the iPhone.

Whats Tethering??

Hello - Dumb question, whats tethering??

Hi,

There are all sorts of rumours flying around at the moment. My money is on either it will be offered on multiple networks in UK or that VF will get it.

This was on a VF forum the other day and posted by a VF staff member:

Hi steveuklad1 and welcome aboard to the forum!

I have to agree with DPH in alot of ways here.... I can see that you have decided at his advice to wait until we launch the iphone later this year and I would recommend you do this too, I wouldnt shell out your hard earned pennies on cancelling a contract now instead of waiting until September.

Unlocking such a handset prior to that will cause you such a headache!

Have a look at the HTC Magic, I have to also say that its looking likely for my next upgrade and Im a huge Nokia fan, so this is groundbreaking for me!

Have a look at what the Magic does, in this link here.

The below answer is from 26th May on the VF forum, I must say that they do not seem to be going out of their way to deny it, so who knows ?

I would be very happy if the new iphone went to VF !

Hi everyone,

As we've had lots of new threads and queries recently about the expected new version of the iPhone and whether it's going to be available through Vodafone or not when it eventually arrives, so we thought that it would be best to give everyone an update as to what our current position is.

Basically, as it stands, nothing has been announced internally within Vodafone to say that we're going to be stocking any version of the iPhone, therefore we at the eForum can't give you a conclusive answer either way at the moment.

If it turns out that we do start stocking the iPhone, then I'm sure it'll be announced via our web page, our Coming Soon section and right here on the eForum - so keep your eyes peeled

As always, if you've got any technical queries then we'll be more than happy to help out if you post on the forum.

Best wishes,

MatC

Me too.

I managed to get O2 to cancel my contract and refund my fees (their service was almost non existant in our area despite their denial). Anyway have approx £500 from them and was going to nip over to Belgium and buy an Unlocked iPhone.

Hopefully however this wont be necessary if VF do start selling it
