I meant that I think it'll be a 4S in parts mostly. Similar to how the iPad mini is pretty much an iPad 2 internally but in a different casing. I imagine Apple might want to retain some consistency with having all 4" screen size devices with Lightning connectors, so the 4S design will be scrapped altogether. So basically an all-new design iPhone, but made with cheaper materials intended for the budget-minded folks who don't need the latest and greatest.

I understand. I was just saying that I like almost everything about the 4a over the 5, and that includes design. This is honestly the first upgrade where speed also wasn't a notable boost for me.

Sure it is. Not for all but not everyone needs or wants the latest and greatest (and the associated price tag). Plenty are using older models so there is a market for a lower cost iPhone whether you and others can understand or not.

No one doubts that people in the US would buy it. However, that doesn't mean there is a huge market for it in the US. This is why it may never be sold in the US. Apple wants to keep their profit margins high. Releasing it in the US could damage them in this regards. Instead Apple could continue to sell the previous generations at a discount in the US.

Don't underestimate how many millions of us are still using our trusty iPhone 3GSs. :)

A new phone being made of plastic doesn't bother us, nor does having the ultimate performance or latest features. We are solidly invested in the ecosystem, but we aren't image conscious enough to worry about buying something "low-end".

The 3GS still works well, but many are literally wearing out. There's a whole wave of people who will want an upgrade in the next year or two, who don't necessarily want to buy a used phone or spend the $$$ on the iPhone 5/6. :apple:

It just depends really. I have an iPhone 5 now. I plan on using it until the iPhone 6 comes out. Depending on what the low cost option is I may consider it. I won't be able to purchase subsidized phones anymore so I'd be more open to low cost options than in the past. That said, I have serious doubts a low cost iPhone in 2014 is going to be an improvement over the iPhone 5.

It depends, if it's basically a 4S (spec-wise) I probably won't make the switch. I want/need an upgrade from my 4S.

sorry, i only use the best iphone... NEXT.

in apple's defense tho.. the cheaper iphone are for the emerging markets who cannot afford the regular price of the iphone. i think the current iphone owners will continue to buy the top of the line iphones and then the new iphone owners may want to start with the cheap version. both win for apple either way.

Depends, low cost on the front end only or low cost on the back end?

If it's only going to be low cost on the front end, meaning the price of the device itself, I won't care if all our blood sucking US carriers force a $60 data plan on the backend anyway.

If I can get the phone and not have to pay an obscene data price for 24 months on it, then it's attractive.

In short, if I still get sucked into paying for rip off service just to save a couple hundred bucks on the front end for the price of the low cost phone, then I may as well just pay the extra couple hundred bucks to get the full featured phone and still pay roughly the same rip off service price for 24 months.

In my eyes, a low cost iPhone is only a deal/only makes sense if you don't have to pay an asinine amount for it monthly in service.

If the speculated budget iphone came to fruition, would you buy it instead of the high end iphone 5/s when replacing your current iphone?

Me - definitely not

I might get one as a second phone just for fun. But the whole point of an iPhone is that it's the highest quality device you can get. A low cost iphone defeats the purpose.

So much will depend on the price. I can't foresee them pricing it any lower than the $349-399 range unlocked for 16GB (I wouldn't even be surprised if it was $429-ish). One hundred plus for doubling the storage per their usual pricing model.

Bare in mind, the iPhone 4S is still $549 unlocked.

And the iPhone 4 (which is now a 2+ year old device) is stil $450 unlocked! And it only comes in 8GBs!

I don't know. Even if it's made of plastic, Apple will find a way to make it look beautiful. It's just in their nature. But the price will really be the deciding factor for many people and not so much the plastic.

iPhone is already cheap. If I had children I might start them out on a cheap iPhone but that's the only market segment I see.

It is not cheap if you are in a developing country (in many parts of Asia, Africa, etc). That is the whole point of the low cost iPhone.

No as I don't need to move to a low cost phone. If I was in a different financial situation I would still most likely not buy the low cost iPhone because if I couldn't afford the "normal" iPhone, I would hope I would have other priorities.

No ...Id rather have the more expensive top of the line model. The more expensive the better IMO to keep the retards who have no idea what they're using and only buy it because it has an Apple on the back the better. The iphone has begun to loose its prestige.

I have to laugh at people such as yourself that buy a phone for the "prestige" of it. It's a phone and most adults don't really give a hoot what phone you're carrying and if they do maybe you should re-think that relationship. When other things are more important in your life than what phone you're carrying you'll probably be a much happier person. (if you think so or not)

No no no. Apple was big because jobs giving us quality. If you go after the small money then that is what you getting now and in the future. Apple needing go back to basics make new designs that you cannot resisting.

Exactly ...Jobs cared! These new clowns don't

Lol... I'm very happy! You sound like the perfect candidate for a cheap plastic iphone... Enjoy !

I suppose a better question might be "what would you be willing to give up in a low cost phone."

Would it get all ios7 features? What about apple cloud services which form that crucial Apple experience (but which are paid for from the iPhone's high margins?). What about camera quality?

Would it still have a retina display? 4G? Since most apps are currently coded with the a5 chip in mind, I am not worried about it not supporting the majority of apps.

My guess is that it will be a redesigned 3GS.

If it looks like this "supposed" leak then I can see it being popular.
