We don't do sponsored posts and don't get any money from companies for publishing articles. The only exception is affiliate links. We don't have an affiliate partnership with this site or with Grid Studio. I didn't mention Grid Studio because there are a bunch of sites/people that make similar art pieces.
Seems sus. Why pick this brand if there are others? Why not mention the brand you’ve previously partnered with on giveaways when bringing up this brand?

Whether or not it’s a paid promotion this is at best apple adjacent and not a rumor or story about the company. If it’s not a promotion it makes sense to not limit the article to one of the many vendors so that when people see this who aren’t familiar with the concept aren’t driven to buy from a single source without doing more research.

It’s just bad journalism in my opinion - do better.

Good to see this one but looks very much the same as GRID studio one. That is cheaper too and better to buy GRID if planning to do so.

I bought an old iPhone and an old iPod, made my own layout on photoshop (I was going to buy GRID originally but the naming for many of the parts was incorrect / I took inspiration from their layout and many others on Etsy) and bought a shadow box picture frame on Amazon. Was a blast taking it apart and gluing it to the cardstock!

I did reach out to GRID and wanted to work with them on my iPod one I made but they never responded sadly - would have been cool to bring that one to light for others

If anyone wants the files, I'd be happy to share -

I believe that if a buyer wants to buy something they should do their research and make sure they are purchasing the best thing for them. This article simply informs a potential buyer that a product like this exists which in turn they would do the research before purchasing. Why is it the responsibility of MacRumors to do more than show something they think is neat? They are not WireCutter.

It's more about what message the article is trying to convey. The headline of this article
"iPhone Parts Become Wall Art in New 'Collectible Phones' Display Pieces" reads as if this is a new idea and not a new entry into an existing category.

The content of the article reads more like an ad for the specific product than an overview of a product category that MacRumors finds interesting.

IF the point of this article wasn't to promote a specific brand, but to talk about the category of product, a more appropriate angle could've been to include this product alongside others in the category and discuss the benefits of upcycling broken phones into art.

But yes - you're right - buyers should always do their own research at the end of the day.

I see what you are saying, but I also think that since this site is not a site like WireCutter, they don't have the responsibility you are saying they have. They are rumors site who occasionally post about tangentially related things but are by no means a "review" website and therefore there is not, in my opinion, any inherent need to showcase comparative products. Plus they have said MANY times in the past that their affiliate links is how they make money not through sponsorship of posts. So, from my perspective, there is nothing really "sus" unless you both discount their word on multiple occasions AND think about the site as a product review website rather than a Apple news/rumors website.

Fair - but just to be clear you're right me saying it's "sus" I am implying that I'm discounting their word. Whether or not MacRumors is telling the truth doesn't change the fact that the article in question reads like an ad. If they want to avoid this connotation they could do better. Do they have to? No. But they could.
