iphone photos "optimised"

what does iTunes do to photos when they are "optimised" for syncing to an iPhone?
it seems to scale them down in size, but to what? is there any way to keep them at a certain size so that when they are zoomed with the reverse pinch they are nice and clear?

No. Seriously. Not at all. You're SOL.

It scales them down to 320x480. It can also add JPEG artifacts. I've had that happen with a few wallpapers. It sucks real bad.

I don't see the point of pinch and zoom, except for 2mp camera photos. Yay, I get to see the grain closeup!! Lame.

Although I was just thinking, I heard about some apps on the app store that let you store images and other files on your iPhone. There is no option in iTunes that I know about that will do this trick, but perhaps one of those programs would be able to handle it? It wirelessly transfers the files and it shows up like a hard drive on your Mac. Try doing a search for that. Good luck.
