iPhone Pretend Activation?

I just got an 8GB iPhone and I need to unlock it.

All the tutorials require the iPhone to be already activated!

On the macrumors forum thread it said you can do a pretend activation.

How do you do that so I can unlock my iPhone...?

Actually the info on that link is outdated. You no longer have to do it like that. The new version of independence has an activate menu. Just 1 button press and its all done for you.
