Well I am never spending my money on an apple product again. I refuse to give my money to a company that plays with its customers the way apple has! This was obviously all planned. They didn't say anything about the rebate so that we would think we weren't getting any and then be happy when they ripped us off for $100 instead of $200! Also the $100 rebate works to get more people into the stores to spend money. How many people do you think will buy something that cost more than $100? They are ***** geniuses! But this is the first and last time Apple will get my money like that!

really? you're going to miss out on some great stuff in the future. oh well ....

A "sale" would have worked better than a price cut

Apple's most glaring mistake is that they didn't simply put the 8GB iPhone "On Sale" for the upcoming holiday period. Simulataneous with this announcement could have easily been added "We will refund $200 to everyone who bought the 8GB phone during the past fourteen day period."

After the holidays, Apple could then safely announce that $399 was the new retail price.

It seems evident that Apple's business model doesn't include the philosophy that "A fast nickel is worth more than a slow dime," or that they don't subscribe to the axiom of "Everyone like a deal." Sam Walton built an empire far larger than Apple using just such tactics.

haha

Wow, someone actually sees through this ploy. It's not that people are getting $100 dollars, it's as though they bought the iPhone for $X99, and were forced to buy a gift card for $100 dollars.

This just shows how blind a lot of people are; and it shows that the phone really isn't worth as much as people initially thought.

BUT, before everyone gets all weird about it, it's good of Apple to offer SOMETHING! Other producers could really learn from this... of course they don't have the flunatics making a big stink when something which seems unfair, prima facie.

Welcome to the smartphone world people.

June 29th: Wow, this thing is AMAZING!!! I love you, I love you, I love you!

Sept. 5th: WTF?? Piece of sh*t! How dare you?? I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!!!

Sept. 6th: Wow, you are truly AMAZING!!! I love you, I love you, I love you!

The price was dropping at some point. I bought a Motorola phone and 3 weeks later it went down $80 and they addd bluetooth to it. Sure I was upset but was I angry with Motorola for doing that? No. That's business.

However, Apple goes and gives all their loyal fans $100 gift cards. What a way to take care of their customers.

Needless to say, as of today I am an iPhone owner. ;)

We should all phone him to say thank you.

:looks in Address Book for Steve's number:

Hopefully, you'll also stop posting in apple forums then. Buh-bye!!!

Im not going to say thank you to Apple. I just want them to know they screwed up big time. Marketing 101 was def ignored. At least Apple gave some money back. I think that steve should have just said we screwed up sorry here is 100 bux have a nice day instead of trying to come up with this bumpy road bull crap.

And seeing how Apple works I wouldn't be surprised either if they had a few employees in here trying to persuade public opinion. Funny how when I called Apple to complain I got told almost the exact same thing word for word that the fanboys wrote here. It's like they have a little script they have to repeat. Hmm, now I get that 1984 commercial! You might think I'm crazy and I myself think maybe I'm going a little over the top with this idea but you never know. :p

This is genius.

All these people who were effing and jeffing that they were never going to buy another Apple product.....are now probably going to walk into an Apple store and lay down a couple of hundred dollars for an iPod for the girlfriend or an Apple TV for the lounge - money they just wouldn't have spent before.

Lucky sons of bitch*s !

This is awesome news! I'm so glad Steve Jobs responded to the customers. Can you say "money towards Leoaprd!"? =P

And that's exactly why Steve Jobs is so brilliant. Not only has Apple addressed the whiners and complainers by giving them an in-store credit as opposed to a cash refund, thus forcing them to spend more money with Apple, but many customers will have the exact same idea as you - put the money towards an item which is more than $100.

So now Apple has not only milked an extra $200 out of the early adopters, but has also come out with a strategy which involves these customers giving even more of their money to Apple. And the people who were whiners, saying they would never buy Apple again are now proven to be hypocrites as well as complainers. Simply brilliant, I love it. Milk them for all it's worth Apple!

This guy sounds like a zune marketer to me. Microsoft astroturfer. ;)

Actually - in hotnews on apple.com and att web-site it uses the term 'sale' ...

"iPhone is currently available at AT&T retail stores or at apple.com with special pricing available now through January, 31 2008; $299 (4GB model - while supplies last) and $399 (8GB model)."

I am happy for the 100 buck gift card - very happy. I like :apple: products, love my iphone...

I wasn't even mad about the price drop. But to get money back for being an early adopter. This shows excellent Customer Service, and that Apple cares for their customers..Awsome Job Apple and Thanks for my new Airport Extreme Base Station.

Jeeze

Awesome, if I had an iPhone, I'd go buy 100 ringtones! OR 50 songs and 50 ringtones! OR old NBC episodes!

Wow lucky people! Complain and whine AND get your milk & cookies! That's very nice of the Jobster, but he raises good points about technology. Don't forget it, because this wasn't the first and isn't the last, it just happens to have a very high profile. With that said, as much as I always respected Apple, this one tops that off to the brim. Cheers!

Im disgusted.

This is an amazing thing for Apple to do. However, I'm more digusted now than i was last night when I was reading through post after post of people whining when all i wanted to do was find out about the great products released. I can't believe people are still complaining. You will never see a company do this.
To the people complaining about only getting a credit to the apple store:
Don't ever start a business. You are sure to fail.
What do you want steve to send you 2 benjamins? Do you expect when ever a price on a product is dropped you are going to get a refund for what you paid. Get real and get over it. Im throwing up in my mouth because of the disgusting ego-centric attitude some people have.

To the people who are happy with this:
Congratulations. You are lucky.

To all the people that only registered in the last two days and are still complaining saying they are never going to buy another apple product. Have fun with the other products out there. You are really taking a stand. Steve is going to never be able to sleep because you are upset, meanwhile, he made millions of new friends. And dont say you are a loyal customer. a loyal customer wouldnt cry because a product price increased so more people could have it and then the company still give you something for buying it early.

Sorry if this post is long and ridiculous. I've just been so annoyed over this ordeal.

I was a little miffed by the drop in price yesterday, but not to the point that some people seemed to have been. I understand the nature of technology and how things can change quickly, but I don't recall Apple ever doing this type of change this quickly. I expected that I would get more apple products in the future, maybe with a little more consideration, but I never get that warm fuzzy feeling from other computer companies that I do from apple products, so they are what I get.

This gesture eases my mind and lets me know that supporting Apple is a good thing, as I know of no other company that would be like this. I was mostly miffed because I only purchased the phone 3 weeks ago and so was just outside the "window". Actually, had there not been a tax free weekend that weekend I probably would not have gotten it then and picked up the reconditioned 8GB after the event yesterday saving $250.

I had posted previously that I would be very happy with $100 rebate of some kind and so will be happy with this provided there isn't some loop hole that keeps them from giving it to me.

But this is the first and last time Apple will get my money like that!

Just when I thought that contributions to this thread couldn't actually get any more idiotic ...

Y'know what ... I've been tracking back 15 years of Mac purchases and working out just how badly Apple have screwed me by having the audacity to update their technology and reduce their prices.

So ... my first Mac had a 25MHz processor, 4Mb of RAM and 20Mb HDD. For roughly the same money, my next Mac had a 180MHz processor, 64Mb of RAM and 160Mb HDD. Roughly 5x the machine for the same money. On a straight conversion, that second machine should have cost ~£7500, meaning Apple screwed me out of £6000.

My next Mac had a 450MHz processor, 384Mb of RAM and a 20Gb HDD - roughly 3x the machine for approximately the same price. Should have cost around £5000, so I got shafted by about £3000.

My most recent Mac has a 2GHz processor, 2Gb of RAM and 250Gb HDD, or roughly 5x the machine so that's another £6000 they suckered out of me.

So ... that's £6K+£3K+£6K ... £15,000 then. Now, since Apple are rebating half of the amount people think they're getting screwed by, I reckon they owe me £7,500.

I'll take that in Apple vouchers, Steve.

Cheers!

Jim
