iPhone price cut: Official response from Steve Jobs

Solid!

I called Apple this morning about the possibility of credit, response was the 14 day window. No worries, I figured I'd just give it a try.

But this.... awesome (provided it does apply to ALL iPhone purchasers). If it's something like $100 of $300 or above, I'm cool with that- looks like I'll either get an Apple TV or give it to my parents and have them finally fo Mac.

Kudos, Steve, kudos.

Works for me.

Really, it's an easy move. They probably get 25-50% markup on products, even more if you buy software, and odds are you'll spend more than $100. Pretty cheap for a little good will.

I wasn't that bothered by the price drop (its happened to me plenty of times before) so have to give kudos for Apple to doing this. I'm very happy, and will be putting that $100 towards a 80Gb iPod Classic.

That is simply awesome. Even though I have yet to buy an iPhone, eh, don't want to "switch" to ATT, this is a BIG reason I'm such an Apple fan. They had to do NOTHING for anyone and could have simply said, yep, that's the price you pay for being an early adopter.

Kudos to everyone at Apple. Now, about getting one of these things on Sprint, LOL.

That's pretty cool of him to write. $100 isn't $200, but it's still nice of them to do that. They could easily say, "Screw you."

Well you guys lucked out.

Steve Jobs said:
Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

That should be in the header of the MR forums for everyone who asks about "Should I buy this now or not?"

It isn't $200, but at the same time they didn't need to do anything. Think about it for a minute. Would Microsoft or Motorola do anything like this? Probably not. I will accept $100 discount.

Anyone notice how Apple stock just went up for the first time today? Just happened since the letter came out.

Mark this as "The Gospel according to Steve Jobs" in case this ever happens again we can reference "Gospel" to stop all the b*tching.

Thank you apple

Being a Macnerd for quite sometime now. I always buy the newest and greatest from apple infact i just bought a brand new imac mid 2007 the day it came out. When i heard about the price drop i was very offened that apple would treat us loyal customers this way. I am very thankful for the Credit they are giving us.

very good news. apple would be stupid not to do this - when our iphone's battery dies in about a year, we will need to get another phone and apple wants to make sure that we buy another iphone.

plus, why mess with your most loyal customers - the ones that actually camp out for days to buy your products.

thank you for coming to your senses mr. jobs!!

Heh. Pay close attention to how Apple builds hype.

Start at $600 -- get the early adopters in, build a reputation as a premium product.
Cut to $400 -- early adopters go nuts, which is exactly as intended -- everyone and his mother finds out about the price drop.
Once the "price drop furor" story hits CNN, Fox News, and absolutely everywhere else, throw the early adopters $100 in store credit. Which costs about nothing, since they're most likely to buy accessories with that kind of amount, and accessories are all profit.

End result: everyone hears about the price drop without a dime in ad spending, and everybody loves Apple. What a clever script.

This whole thing is stupid.

Jobs is right when he says technology goes down in price over time.

Look at other things like a new digital camera that sold for $999 on day one.I've seen them go down in price a lot over the following 2 months.
Same with the iPhone.
I bought one on June 29th knowing they would be cheaper by Christmas.

Some people won't be happy until they get something for free.

Thank god because i'm was going to flip the hell out on Steve. I guess sending those e-mails did something.

It isn't $200, but at the same time they didn't need to do anything. Think about it for a minute. Would Microsoft or Motorola do anything like this? Probably not. I will accept $100 discount.

yes, actually, microsoft did - they gave european customers a couple of free games, plus a controller after the price dropped on the xbox ( Thats worth more than a $100 too!) ... as a few people said on the "8GB iPhone Price Drop, 4GB iPhone Discontinued", here:
https://www.macrumors.com/2007/09/05/8gb-iphone-price-drop-4gb-iphone-discontinued/

That is truly admirable of Apple, I chalked it up as a loss. I was kinda upset, but the iPhone is so badass it really didn't matter. But $100 gift card to Apple is awesome, I'm going to buy my mom a new iPod nano;)

What do you think will be the percent of people who actually spend this $100 credit?

And what do you think will be the percent of people who overspend the $100 credit and actually give Apple more money?

So I don't think they will "lose" out very much financially. If anything, they'll just have guaranteed the early adopters Apple customers for life. And each of these customers will then go and tell 10 more people of Apple's generosity.

Apple is brilliant.
