Your offer sucks- and I'm inclined to decline it-- mainly because you are insulting my intelligence.

Keep your coupon-- I'm not giving you another cent. I might even check out Dell products!!!!

On second thoughts, a few days later, I think this move is a bad one. Why?

Because it sets a precedent and as many people have already pointed out, this is the way things work in the mobile phone market. All those who claim to be Apple supporters while shouting the loudest are crippling Apple's ability to operate in this market on the same terms as other mobile phone manufacturers.

There's no point in saying Apple don't do this kind of thing (price cuts) when this is their first foray into an entirely new market for them. And are we going to see the same clamour again when the next gen iPhone is released? What brakes is this going to put on the timely release of new models?

For that reason, I hope that they don't do this again.

This whole episode should serve as a lesson to everyone that you DO NOT buy in to consumer electronic goods hype, regardless of whichever company its from, and wait 4-6 months before buying a new product that has not been previously introduced by the same company. Consumer electronics have a 6-month product cycle. I'd like to add a caveat to what SJ said about you can't wait or you'll never buy a another new product. That caveat is - if you don't absolutley need it at that time, then come back in 6-months when it will be cheaper, better or both.

Except in this case, they dropped the price within two months, and didn't introduce a new or upgraded model to replace it. They just cut the price two months after it's introduction by 30%. Show me another phone manufacturer who's done that in the same amount of time without introducing a new or upgraded model of the same phone.

Riiiiiiiiiight, the key here is 6 MONTHS! Not 2. And I would expect that from motorola. The whole point here is that Apple stayed in business in the early days due to loyal customer support and Apple doesn't usually drop prices that quick. As I've said many many times this week- It's not that Apple lowered the price on the iPhone(I knew they would) but the fact that they lowered by $200 in 2 months time. That's the point and thats it.

So you would have been ok with it after 6mos? Right...

Would it have been ok if the iPhone had been out for a year at $600, but the price dropped by $200 two months after you bought it? I have little doubt that you would have felt just as stupid and angry.

I'm a long time Apple customer, but didn't buy an iPhone... primarily because there wasn't enough flexibility in the data plans for my tastes. However, with the price drop I'm now more tempted to buy one... which I imagine was the intended effect.

In any case, obviously something changed in the past two months. Maybe sales did not meet expectations, or maybe sales exceeded expectations and it made sense to place larger manufacturing orders leading to volume discounts, or maybe because of the sales patterns they saw they restructured their deal with AT&T and a much lower price point made sense, or maybe they saw that a lot of folks seemed happy to use a hacked iPhone simply as a WiFi enabled iPod and brought out the touchscreen iPod earlier than anticipated, again leading to high manufacturing volumes... not to mention the need to bring pricing more inline with the rest ofthe iPod family.

In the 80s I bought a computer workstation with a partner (borrowing money from parents, using up all our savings, and taking out a loan) for $30k. In less than 6mos of ownership the value dropped to $15k because the company brought out a new model with the same capabilties at half the price (due to price pressures from PCs).

So while I empathize with the feelings, as Steve Jobs indicated, that's just the nature of the business. Needless to say I did not get a $15k coupon in my case... be happy with your $100 coupon, it's the exception rather than the rule.

If Apple wasn't worried about what they did they would have never offered the $100 back.

Yes, well we can rest assured now that Apple will not drop prices as quickly again in the future... thank goodness for that!

...but i'm not happy with it and i'm walking away from apple. can jobs afford that?...
Yes.

... or should he just give me what i want and not what he wants to give me?...
No.

...you're a lamb. and a fool to think that apple does not have billion dollar marketing team geared toward making money. there is no caring.

To borrow a quote from another thread:
...You're angry because someone else is getting a better deal than you despite the fact you willingly paid the price...

...I just can't believe how many people are so happy to get screwed over...

Explain to me again, how I was "screwed over"?

Suck it up and deal...

Sorry people, but you all ought to get down and kiss Jobs' ass for this. I don't feel any pity for early iPhone buyers. It was new, trendy technology that was guaranteed to sell out. Apple is in business to make money. Everyone knew dang well that sooner or later the price would drop. It would either be weeks or months, but one way or the other, eventually other people who waited would pay less than you if you just HAD to have an iPhone right away. Other companies drop prices like this all the time after successful releases, but it doesn't make the front page because they aren't as high profile as Apple. Apple is just playing nice for all of its stupid customers who think they should have their cake and eat it too.
I bought my iPhone for $400, still $100 cheaper than those who got the rebate, and all I had to do was wait. Cry me a river.........you pay to have the latest tech, that is how it always has been, and will be in the future.

The RAZR cited in other threads didn't count?

Wow. It's really a shame that people cannot except Apple dropping the price of the iPhone. Crying whining babies. Now everytime Apple drops the price, there will be probably people whining they were early adaptors and they "Deserve" to get the price difference,. Cussing and threathening to leave Apple. Apple screwed me, I bought the product 1 day past the 14 day period. Screw apple, I'm going to DELL. You people have so idea how many time Apple did this in the past with their Powermacs G5. How many times Sony does this with their camcorders and NOBODY cries or complains.

Just wow

The people I see whining the most are the people whining about the whiners. Why don't you people go to another forum if your tired of the people who bought a phone 2 months ago and are upset about a $200 drop in price. Are you people that jealous of the people who had iPhones 2 months ago that you have to laugh at them for being disappointed. And now you're mad at those people because apple wants to give them back $100. Get a life and move on!

Give it a break. If Apple dropped the price 5 months from now, you would still whine. Let's face it, you whiners didn't want to pay $600 in the first place. It was too expensiv. Now you blame Apple for your mistake by dropping the price for the holidays.. Apple didn't force people to buy it. You people agreed to pay what Apple asked for it.

Please don't call people who bought the iPhone whining babies. That is taking a cheep shot and says a lot about your own character, or lack of.

What's so wrong with wanting to get a good deal when you buy something?

Now they should voice their concern that they paid too much, so that it doesn't happen again.

What should I tell people when they ask me about my Mac loptop? (it happens all the time and I have four of them) I usually tell them they are a good value, but now should I say buyer beware? you are paying an extra 30% for the logo?

Also a rebate is not the same thing as a gift card.

(If I don't respond again that doesn't mean I agree with you.)

The concequences of pleasing the masses

This is what apple will have to deal with as it progresses to the mass consumer level. Idiots complaining about everything. If Apple was smart, they would not do anything, just like they never did anything in the past. As mentioned in the previous posts, now they will be forced into offering rebates, refunds, exchanges and who knows what else when they come out with an update. I can't wait to get my next macbook pro upgrade discounted a few hundred dollars!
What about the next iphone upgrade with 3g. Do we get one of those too if we complain hard enough? Apple has set themselves up to be dealt big losses from no standing their ground.

I THink its stupid that the people that didnt buy an iphone are complaining about this saying we are just whining

If You didnt buy an iphone or dont plan on buying one this doesnt concern you so just stop complaining

What apple did was what some people would say unfair to its loyal customers some companies would do something about it some wouldn't

Apple chose to apologize with a $100 store credit Im thankful there even doing that

So please people your giving me a head ache just mind your own business LOL

I've purchased about $20,000 worth of products from Apple in the past and never whined when the price dropped 6 months down the road, it was expected and always is. I've delt with several price drops over the last 20 years including cell phones, TVs, speakers, other assorted stereo equipment, and many Apple products. As I've said many times in this forum as with others, it was the amount and the short time frame. If it was not an issue then Apple would have never offered the $100 gift cert. Apple would have never given the gift cert/rebate just because people whined. So stop all this madness and stop posting like you know what you're talking about when you have no clue.

By the way, I think it was a great move by Apple to offer the $100 credit and totally unexpected.

Nicely said.

Didn't see those threads. The razr was heavily subsidized by carriers, but don't ever recall seeing Motorola drop the price by $200 within two months of it's introduction.

Well, that's what was cited in those other threads.

If that's the case, I'd think that might change some of the rhetoric.

I wonder when they are going to release the info for the rebate this week, I bought 3 iphones so am excited to go spend $300 at the apple store :)
might get a :apple:tv or a bluetooth and a new nano. hopefully some info will come out today

I bought three too. Like you I am waiting for the gift card details to show up so I can pull the trigger on a MacBook Pro.

... hence the refund. which i think sucks. it should be at least $200.

I can't believe some of the comments I am reading here. APPLE OWES YOU EARLY ADOPTERS NOTHING. You bought the iPhone at a price you felt was worth it or you wouldn't have paid it. Price lowers in the future that is your tough luck. The fact that Apple is offering you $100 store credit is a FREE GIFT, which you do not deserve. Looking at it any other way is self-centered and the behavior of a spoiled child.

With the $100 store credit you can pick up OS 10.5 for only $29. But some of you think Apple should give you a MacBook Pro for buying an iPhone.

Apple is the one offering the $100 gift certificate. So they are admitting their own mistake to discontinue a new product so soon after the release.

You guys should really quit bashing the people who bought an iPhone.

No they are simply saying" We know our early adopters are whining babies and we realize this and want to give them a pacifier. We have done so with this $100 offering. We also never intend to drop prices again so quickly because we see what happens. Thanks for allowing us to keep our margins higher in the future".

That is what they are saying.

Can we quit complaining about a price drop it was almost a week ago, get over it. Be happy your getting $100 instead of a "sorry we had to to meet sales goals"....so with that said, does anyone know when we are getting info regarding this gift certificate?
