I'm surprised people are split so much on this. I understand preferences between 1 and 3, but 2 just seems like a clearly worse version of 3.

Everyone voting for 3 should be forced to buy a 7S.
You want bezels? JUST GET THE 7S!!!!!!!!!!

You do realize that the phone will need to have these functions somewhere right? If there is no battery icon, no signal bars, no status bar icons altogether, or home button equivalent - then yes, no black areas would make sense.

I know, but if they want to make it like number 3, then why use OLED?
They can make it like old Samsung galaxy phones with invisible back en menu buttons.

You're right. The black bar on the bottom of 3, even if it's a function area, looks too much like a bezel, the screen estate is getting smaller again.

I don't quite follow. I think it looks like that due to the picture. Real life will likely be a different scenario, but it's possible that perspective may still be true.

I would absolutely go for 1. I would want whatever we're doing at that time to take up every bit of screen space that is available.
(Below is the design that I'm talking about)

I really don't care that app developers will have to redesign their apps to fit the 18:9 or 18.5:9 aspect ratio that is respected to be on the iPhone 8,X,Pro,Edition.

When the iPhone 5 came out with a 16:9 aspect ratio, everybody had to redesign their apps. Before that, all iPhones had an 3:2 aspect ratio. I think it's time for Apple to do some major design upgrades and go for design #1. It would make the device stand out even more and it would look more futuristic.

Apple has been using the 3:2 aspect ratio for 5 generations and 16:9 aspect ratio for 6 generations (If you count the expected iPhone 7S and 7S Plus). I really do want design #1 with the 18:9 or 18.5:9 aspect ratio on the iPhone 8,X,Pro,Edition.

It won't be 1. It's terrible design and not at all something Apple would do. Unfortunately with the design of the display, people have gone down the path of awe getting in the way of critical thinking.

Yes, the natural tendency is to want all of the display. The problem with that is the phone becomes assymetrical and the design of apps would make no sense, especially adding in rounded corners.

Top will be a black bar. Bottom will be a black bar. They will be symmetrical and none of the concept images depict it accurately.

It's actually really simple:

OLED gets them the ability to blend the cutout to the black bar that will be at the top, and it allows them to cut the display in this radical shape. And it allows them to increase efficiency so it's possible to have a 5.8" display in this body size.

Your analogy to Samsung back button makes no sense because this area is DYNAMIC on the iPhone. It is not a STATIC single LED light that shows through a cutout in the bezel. It's display which dynamically changes based on the instance you're at or app you're in.

Everyone has the Touchbar slapping them in the face and only few understand what Apple is doing here.

Does OP work for Apple and our majority vote will end up in the final product launch? *wishful thinking*

Humans eh.

2.

Because I like the clean status bar, with white font on black background.

The dark lower bezel in 3 is good, but it should be like that when Dark Mode is selected, along with the rest of the display (white font on dark background).
