Can anyone advise on purchasing an unlocked IPhone at the Hong Kong airport? I will be intransit there in Jul and wish to purchase a phone.

Trust me, you can spot a counterfeit a mile away.
There are no 'real looking real functioning' CFit iphones.
There's crappy copies, they feel like junk and say stuff like iPhone Air or iPhone Mini or M8. They use Fake OSes which are slow and don't really work. They are dumb phones plain and simple, they cost sand feel like $80

An unlocked HK 3gs will cost $700 ish USD for a 16GB. (this price is here in Beijing, in HK it might be $15-$30 cheaper).

I could probably get a good deal if I bought in bulk but I don't know how many people want Factory Unlocked 3GS' in america.

IIRC, a guy had them for $615 here in Beijing, I don't really remember it's been awhile since I checked the prices.

However I don't know about them in the airport, there are a lot of foreigners there, which means it'll cost $1,000... If you can find it.

I just checked, it's cheaper on ebay.

i was in china and it was quite easy to spot fakes. The legit unlocked ones will be sealed in boxes that have clues on them like apple.com/hk or something. A close examination of the box and you can easily tell fake or not fake. Expect to pay around US $700 or so for legits. Most fakes are nowhere near that expensive. The general rule of thumb is if it's too good to be true, it is too good to be true.

next time i'm in china, i'll prolly see if i can pick up a 16gb unlocked HK iphone 3GS to use while in China. I'll prolly still use my US one domestically since I want the unlocked one to last me at least 6-7 years of light calling in China.

As a HKer with occ visit to the Airport, I don't see any counterfeit iPhone in the shops there. Even in most of the phone shops in HK (at least those run by mobile service companies), I haven't seen a counterfeit one. But of course I am sure there must be some well-known "special" places selling them in HK. And so far I have met many people with the genuine iPhone but none with counterfeit or complaining of counterfeit in the news or press.

Oh yeah, you can lookup the serial numbers of the HK phones, they either start or end with a common thing, it's pretty evident. I forgot what it was exactly just google 'how to tell hk iphone serial' and I'm sure it'll be the first post.

Like I said though ebay is cheaper, but those are used.

Hi, I got my iphone on an auction site like ebay but for an insane price:eek: , and they have all sort of brand new electronic stuff. You should check it out first.

If you are buying an iphone from the Hong Kong Airport then you dont have to worry about counterfeits. Hong Kong airport has one of the best duty free shopping center anywhere in the world.
