Am I right in thinking that the iPhone does have the ability to run stuff in the background because things like Calendar events and Alarm clock must be doing something in the background. Its just Apple limited third party applications to that functionality?
 
yes, apples own apps can run in the background - phone, messages, clock, calendar, email, ipod, voice memos all run in the background
 
Just wish they had a better event reminder. One beep on a calendar event is rubbish.
