Here is a little app I wrote. It's called iPhoneQuickSearch and it's at http://iphonequicksearch.com.

Google works great but have you ever tried to use your iPhone to look for other things, like movies on IMDb when you're at the video store, or prices on Amazon when you're at the mall, or just junk on craigslist and articles on Wikipedia?...

It's been just a week since the phone was released but I do it all the time, and I grew tired of always waiting for the same pages to load and then zoom the tiny editable fields before I could enter what I was looking for. So here it is: iPhoneQuickSearch presents all the main search engines on a single page: Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Webster, Amazon, eBay, craigslist, MarketWatch, Flickr, IMDb, del.icio.us and Technorati. Enter the search terms in the big editable field on top of the page and tap on the engine you want to use. By default, the search results are opened in a new window, allowing you to use the application as your iPhone home page.

The page adapts its layout to the orientation of the screen. Scrolling down, a small preferences panel allows you to define a default search engine (which can then be activated directly from the iPhone virtual keyboard) and a couple of other settings.

Hope you like it... Send me suggestions.
    Cheers,
    Pierre

The thing I like best, it's the animations when a new page opens with the search results, and the coming back to QuickSearch after you close the new page. But this, of course, I can't really take credit for: it's just the way the iPhone works and, damn, the thing is beautiful!

I made some little changes so the page works correctly on desktop browsers. I'm usually a Firefox guy because I can't do without the Search field in the toolbar that allows me to select any search engine I want. Now, by setting the QuickSearch page as my home page, I think I'll switch to Safari for most of my browsing, and enjoy the automatic synchronization of the bookmarks between my desktop machine and my iPhone. I also removed the "Clear field" checkbox which was a bit confusing and replaced it with the 'X' icon inside the field itself, which is standard UI on iPhone.

Soon, I'll extend the app to support many more web sites and users will be able to select which engines they want to display, or add their own.

    Thanks for the comments!

    works with iPhone 1.1.1

I fixed the page and it is now compatible with iPhone v1.1.1. Like before, a search with the default engine can be launched just by typing the Search key on the keyboard .

Scroll the page to access the preferences and change the default engine.
