But, if you forgot your phone somewhere, someone can just pick it up and unlock everything of yours. That is where I am kind of not comfortable about...

On the other hand, if they need us to put in the password on the phone to activate the unlock feature, then what is the point of having this other than combining all the other keys?
If you lose your roomkey, someone can go unlock your room....?

Thats why they don't print the room numbers on them...

Just don't scratch your room number on the case of your phone. And leave it locked.

More than waterproof... what if your cellphone is out of charge and nearest charger is IN your room O_O

I was just there for Dopey Challenge, the wristband was absolutely fantastic as you outlined.

Still... It is a consumable item. Integration with an iPhone BTLE would reduce waste. Part of me would prefer that...

The bands are reusable and last for years. If you go back, you can use the same bands.

A small bonus - they unlock extra content in the Disney Infinity video game, which in case you are not familiar, uses an RFID platform similar to the Skylander games.

I still like a plastic key. Amazingly enough there are times while at a hotel where I don't want my phone with me (pool, and a couple other things if I worry about the phone being damaged) Maybe as an opinion or extra.

You could totally get locked out of your room if the phone battery dies.

This also seems ripe for hacking and eaves dropping and replay attacks.

Smart crooks can be in your room in no time.

Sounds like a cool idea but I believe I read about something similar a few years ago.

Honestly I'd be more worried about house keeping or maintenance with a master key stealing something out of my room than someone hacking my BT transmission.

If I stayed at a hotel they gave you the option. I would probably try it a few times as long as there wasn't an extra charge to use the feature but I'd probably continue to use the card option because when I'm at a hotel I tend to use the pool and not have to worry about my phone getting wet or somebody with sticky fingers.

Good idea, but in the whole instance of taking a vacation, you don't want to be bothered, so that's problem #1.... You lock yourself out without your phone.

#2 it better be for "other" phones too

#3. It better work

You always have that feeling if you MUST use technology as the only option, I can't see that happening, but if so, them there will be problems, i can guarantee it.

We have a automatic door locks, and despite i have a FOB to open it, i always use manual key..... You would have to anyway, when batteries go flat...

From Google.

Code:
Version	Codename	API	Distribution
2.2	Froyo	8	1.3%
2.3.3 -
2.3.7	Gingerbread	10	21.2%
3.2	Honeycomb	13	0.1%
4.0.3 -
4.0.4	Ice Cream Sandwich	15	16.9%
4.1.x	Jelly Bean	16	35.9%
4.2.x	17	15.4%
4.3	18	7.8%
4.4	KitKat	19	1.4%

Only 9.2% of Android users are on 4.3 or higher.

Considering such a small minority of Android users are using up-to-date devices + this being a MacRumors site. I think it's A-OK to exclude Android.

Using percentages of installed base only works when you provide the installed base total. You didn't because it contradicts your point. As of September 2013 there were approximately 1 billion android phones activated throughout the world. 10% of that makes 100 million android users who are on "up-to-date" devices. Compare that to iOS' base of about 100 million devices...in total. This includes about 10% still using pre-4s models. So who would be a minority? With new android devices making up about 80% of market sales...iOS would seem to be the one fading away.

Just get your facts straight before spouting garbage propaganda.

How safe is it to transmit room key information over Bluetooth? I imagine it's encrypted somehow, but then many older garage door openers could be recorded code and all and played back by another device until they started doing rotating codes. I'm sure they're using something here, but hackers have proven pretty good at breaking security on even high security systems. You could end up with some underground room key opening app.

But it does say which hotel...given enough time, the crook can find out...

Even if one is really good about keeping ones phone charged (which I am) however the battery pack is not likely to be on me as it's a general trip item, the mini one maybe. Long time out, battery dies then you have to deal with that or the other things you talked about.

A key card really is easier and I love tech. Talk of keycards then people could want their credit cards, debits etc... on there phone as well. Sometimes current or old ways of doing things does work well enough.

When will these developers realize this is not actually a great idea of having the phone to unlock stuffs?

Isn't Apple the best example of losing their phone when the iPhone 4 was left at the bar?

Lose the phone = lose your ride, lose your hotel room, lose your belongings in the room...

hm...

Because my passcode locked phone will tell someone which hotel room I'm staying in and how to access it?

Don't be a Luddite.

This is a great idea and I completely support it. I hate digging out my wallet to get a key card to run the lift or open my hotel door. My phone is more handy.

I would hope the software for the system would look for that kind of activity and alert someone to possible shenanigans (same key being used in multiple doors).

You left the phone at the hotel restaurant...
Now what is the case?
And if you decide to store the key in your wallet and make it harder to access than your phone, that is your choice.
I find the phone larger than the card key anyway.

That needs to be implemented. Working with testing software before taught me a lot of funny (a.k.a. dumb) things people can do and we think they would not...

If you are leaving your phone in the restaurant you have bigger problems than your room key.

Try this:

You have 2 kids with you on a trip, one is a toddler and the other is a baby.
That is one of the many cases that can cause people to FORGET their phone.

Recall the engineer of iPhone 4 fiasco?

yes, but its easier to lose and forget a plastic little key for your door than your phone.

most of us have our phones with us all the time, its part of us. meaning we tend to pay a little more attnetion to where it is.

plastic keys you use for one week a year while on vacation? I've lost so many of those. Destroyed many in pools. had many die from magnets.

heck, as Mentioned before, I've even locked myself out of a hotel room in my underwear before.

Like all else, you would never have no ability to get in. thats what the hotel desk is for. If I can do the walk of shame in my skivvies to the front desk in a crowded hotel lobby, you can "man up" and go get a spare key when you accidentally forget it, or heaven forbid, lose your phone.

It's not the end of the world.
