I need to restore my iPhone (currently OS 3.1.2) back to its original factory setting. If I do this through iTune, will I have to upgrade to the new OS 4.0?

I don't wish to do that, as I have a new ibootrom, so I near that jail breaking in the new OS is not yet possible unless I have made some smart decision in the past, which I don't know if I did.

Anyway, is there anyway I can restore factory settings WITHOUT upgrading to the latest firmware, ie. keep in 3.1.2?

    Thank you for your help.

If your SHSH are on file in Cydia, then you can shift-restore (Win) or option-restore (Mac) to 3.1.2 using Saurik's method. If you don't have your 3.1.2 SHSH, you're out of luck.

Download an 3.1.2 IPSW. Put your iPhone in DFU mode. Then Shift restore.

If it only was that simple with a 3GS model.
What you said only applies to 2G and 3G models only.

Oh I forgot that the 3GS needed signed firmware. My mistake.

    but for a "3G" (not "3GS")?

So if I have a "3G" model, then I don't need a signed version of 3.1.2? I can just download it from the internet (http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/) then do the shift restore (on a pc)??

    Thanks for the help.

sorry to crap on your thread but when I jailbroke my 3gs couple of days ago you guys told me to do that cydia option that pops up the first time where it saves the info of my iphone on their server. So now if I accidentally upgraded I can go back to 3.1.3?

If you only saved your hashes a couple days ago, you don't have 3.1.3 saved, so you cannot restore to 3.1.3. Check Cydia for SHSH versions saved. Likely says 4.0, might only be 4.0.1 as 4.0 signing was discontinued a couple days ago.
