    Ok so here's what happened:

They didn't have the song I wanted in the Ringtone section of iTunes on the iPhone so I purchased the track as a normal song.

I then proceeded to make my own custom ringtone (changing the file to m4r, etc).

The ringtone does appear on the ringtone list but when I choose to sync the iPhone with the ringtone I get the warning "The iPhone is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?"

I have never synced this iPhone with any other iTunes library. Any way to fix this?

This is on the latest Snow Leopard, iTunes 10.0.1 and iPhone 4 (4.1)

So since you've never synced it before, I'm assuming there is no music on it?

Do you have apps installed? If not you should just sync it, and let it be backed up on your computer. If you do, the make sure you write a list of apps you've downloaded (just in case your phone gets wiped) then sync the phone and reinstall the apps if necessary, and you'll have your ringtone too!

I've synced it before but I'm only syncing apps from and to iTunes. I have photos on the iPhone but they are from a backup taken from my 3GS. I'm not syncing anything else.

It's just ringtones and books that give me that message. If I try and sync music or photos, podcasts, etc I don't get any message and it syncs as it should. Maybe it's getting confused with my 3GS? I purchased those books on it and I also had custom ringtones on it.

I wonder if I went with "Erase & Sync" what it would erase. I should be able to recover everything from latest backup, shouldn't I?

I'm experiencing the same issue. I purchased a business ringtone (30 secs long) through iTunes and changed the extension to .m4r; I double click on the file and it plays on iTunes but it won't be added to my Ringtones playlist or sync.

Any suggestion to what is happening?

Not sure if you've tried this but it might work. I'll try it as soon as i get home and i'll post some feedback if it works.

to the OP, if you only sync to one library, then you should have all the media and apps in your current library, correct? if so, just erase and re-sync.
