It's now up to Apple to produce. Note 8 will be a guaranteed hit and if Samsung figured out how to embed the finger print reader into the screen it may be a tough battle for a completely redesigned iPhone. After about 2 years of strictly using iPhone I may go back to the Note series this year. I still give the speed factor and OS updating to iPhone but it doesn't solve everything.

Chinese people are interested in new things, and Apple's iPhone 7 isn't very new in the eyes of a Chinese person.

I'm Chinese, and going to China every few years I've realized they are very trend following people. In fact, people talked to me and asked me why I'm using iPhone 6S when the "trend" is iPhone 7.

Since 6S and 7 aren't that different, I don't think many Chinese are buying the 7 because some of them can lie (some Chinese are this kind of people) and say they have the 7.

They have an interesting culture there, a bit more materialistic than Americans as they even talk about different styles of going going out of style and being looked down upon if you're still wearing certain styles...

Needless to say, the iPhone 8 will blow away expectations.

Bad news for Samsung.

Not really, with its GIANT market loss on low-mid-end models, the mediocre total market loss (-2.6%, <10%) indicates that Samsung has been shaping very well on the high-end market, especially that it had such a big issue with its Note 6.

Given that many iPhone customers are now in the waiting mode for the next iPhone, these numbers are not surprising.

Fact is, outside of forums such as Macrumors, very few people know when the iPhones are typically released. Therefore, the majority of the world did not stop buying iPhones because a new one is expected to come out in 4-5 months.

And who is making the lion's share of the profits in all of this? It's not Samsung...
I would hazard a guess that Samsung makes the most money from smartphones, profit from all their own products and then all the profit from selling components to virtually every other manufacturer. Their chip & memory ( and screens) group continues to post new records quarter on quarter.

Or maybe people got tired of the iPhone 6SS after 3 years of the same design?

"People are getting tired of the 3-year-old design..."

but then

"Apple sells 52 million units..."

You might wanna re-think your statement, Mr. Guy ;)

Let's make something clear... that's 577,000 iPhones EVERY DAY last quarter.

But you say people are tired of the same ol' design?

Something doesn't add up. :D

Obviously I'm talking in relation to usual iPhone demand.

It's like saying a Lamborghini is slow compared to a Bugatti, doesnt mean a Lamborghini is a slow car period.

Even Tim Cook said iPhone's are slowing down due to anticipation of a fresh new iPhone.

Did you happen to notice how the chart say Apple sold 363,000 more iPhones last quarter than they did in the year-ago quarter?

You're not having a good time with comments tonight. ;)

First you say people are tired of a 3-year-old design... yet the 52 million iPhones sold says otherwise.

Then you agree with Tim saying iPhone sales are slowing down... yet the chart shows they sold more phones.

:D

Yes and the year ago was also a slow quarter ;)

Do you want to compare it to two years ago, lol?

You must have all day to sit on MR waiting for stories. Usually you are early to respond
No i don't need to sit here all day to respond to the articles, i get a Twitter notification alert on my iPhone when the new article is out.

Usually you are early to respond and little of what you say is of actual value. Lately every article I read you say something inane in the first 5 posts.
My only advice to you is ignore these silly inane posts.if that doesn't work put these people on your ignore list [as per forum rules].You don't need to tell them they write silly or a little valueable posts.

I agree completely with your sentiments. That said, Samsung actually has been the largest producer of selling phones since 2011, which ultimately shocks most when they consider the iPhone to be the largest. But in terms of smart phone manufacturers, they both are giants in the tech industry. I think they both compliment each other one way or the other.

WOW!! Samsung is towering Apple - Hope it may Force Apple to come out with better new products. Competition is always good for consumers.
They always towered apple. They make a plethora of Android smartphones from the very budget to the galaxy line. Apple iPhone software song fine if you want to compare product for product with Samsung. It's mainly the software where apple needs improvement as per people's opinions

If you included the profit that Samsung makes from everything it does - e.g., smartphones, tablets, computers, components, displays, tvs, washing machines - the total would still be less than that which Apple makes from iPhones.

And who is making the lion's share of the profits in all of this? It's not Samsung...

Completely irrelevant to the topic of unit sales and market share.

If Company A decides that they want to lose money just to hit market share / volume of numbers, because that's their business strategy, it is no more wrong than Apple purposely having giant margins' (Larger than the rest of the industry) just to claim profit numbers.

Different business strategies doesn't suddenly change the evaluation and analysis of Volume of sales.

if Anything, Apple's constant claim of super high profit margins, while good for investors, isn't actually good for consumers, and as consumers, Apple's constantly talkign about how amazing they are with profits is a red flag to me about Apple's investment in it's future. being profitable is good. Rampant profiteering for profiteering sake, not so good.

If you look at the bigger picture, it's not better products that are gaining marketshare. It's comparable products that are more affordable. The Chinese brands, for instance, don't have patented abilities or features. They are simply a well-assembled collection of other companies' parts. But they are a better value.

Excellent post. And you're correct. Affordability is more of a consideration over what considered "Better." Numbers will easily grow when you factor reasonable pricing.

Worldwide iPhone sales were flat in the first quarter of 2017, according to Gartner, causing a year-on-year drop in Apple's share of a growing smartphone industry boosted by the rise of top Chinese mobile manufacturers breaking out into neighboring markets.

Global sales of smartphones to end users totaled 380 million units in the first quarter of 2017, a 9.1 percent increase over the first quarter of 2016, reported Gartner. Of that figure, Apple sold 51.9 million units, up from 51.6 million in Q1 2016, leading to a drop in market share year over year. Samsung retained top spot with 78.6 million units sold to end users, and held on to 20.7 per cent market share, but both figures were declines on a year ago.

Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo had a combined market share in the first quarter of 2017 that accounted for 24 percent, up 7 percent year on year. Huawei held third spot behind second-placed Apple, edging closer to the company with 34 million units in Q1 2017, while Oppo continued to catch up with Huawei, with a 94.7 percent increase in global sales, resulting in the best performance of the quarter and maintaining its number one position in China.

The top three Chinese smartphone manufacturers are driving sales with their competitively priced, high quality smartphones equipped with innovative features, according to Gartner, with aggressive marketing and sales promotion having further helped the brands to take share from others in markets such as India, Indonesia and Thailand. In India alone, for example, Vivo grew by 220 per cent.

In the operating system market, iOS saw continued growth, with a 0.9 percent uptick in market share year on year. But it was Android that fared best, growing its share by 2 percent, thanks to increasing acceptance of Chinese brands in global markets, led by high-quality smartphones.

[doublepost=1495902244][/doublepost]And another shocking developement, KIA outsells Lamborghini. How could that be?

Indeed I have sensed a different appreciation over the last couple of months
Apple has been bitten by a high "snob" factor - where "magical" has transcented into "better than average, but absurdly overpriced".
But I am not aware if that's a mass appreciation or just my surroundings - though.

There is an irrational hate against Apple as well. When I was looking for a replacement for my beloved Amiga computer I listened to my "friends" with their advise "anything but Apple" and bought into the Microsoft platform. When I wanted a portable device I listened again and bought an iPaq. A music player, I listened again and bought a creative zen. When the zen turned out to be an overpriced piece of dren I bought an iPod classic, and loved it. Then I tossed my iPaq and replaced it with an iPod touch, then my windows laptop was tossed and I bought a MacBook Pro. All of the Apple gear was far superior than the junk I had before. If paying a little more for gear that lasts 5 times as long (so far) is snobbery, I am a snob.
