Apple is the master of scaring people into buying their products, always talking about privacy, etc.
I appreciate your cynicism but this is a police department releasing this information not even Apple.

I don’t think it’s about scaring people. Yeah the privacy ads are a bit silly, but it’s just an advertisement and I don’t think anyone is scared by it. I’m not even sure what this has to do with this though because this incident has nothing to do with privacy.

Well... there always be idiots. The same has happend with modern cars with all the new tech. See The Peltzman Effect.
You’re exactly right. Unfortunately, sometimes technology emboldens people to take more risks. I read a book talking about if every car had a metal spike instead of an airbag in the center of the steering wheel, drivers would drive more carefully. Does this mean we should start installing metal spikes on steering wheels? Maybe?

Only "normal" privacy, I don't need "paranoid" privacy. I don't care if Google knows what I'm interested in buying. I sometimes look at things on bestbuy's website, I don't care if I see an ad for it on MacRumors.

Agreed.

People are deluding themselves into thinking they are gaining some extreme level of privacy by using Apple.

The amount of ways we are getting tracked is honestly breathtaking.
If you're using the internet/networks at all, there's almost no way to avoid it quite honestly.

Perhaps your definition of "normal" privacy would change if you viewed the log of data between each app on your iPhone and the servers.

Each app might just be sitting there looking inert, but they'll be sending hundreds of data payloads about your location, which button you pressed, how far you moved. All data that can be repackaged and sold.

Privacy controls like background usage limiting, location usage and siloing app data is really important. Even as it stands now, so much outside your control is happening hidden in the background.

For other interested techies: search for Proxyman or Charles Proxy and have a look at the requests yourself.

Yes, there is. It just requires extra work.

Download a more privacy-focused browser like Brave, Vivaldi or Mullvad Browser. Enable the VPN feature. Change the default security settings to allow the browser to forget you once you've closed the tab (or install the Cookie Autodelete & uBlock Origin extensions). Turn off all telemetry settings.

Then visit https://coveryourtracks.eff.org/ and get a report of how trackable you really are.
