The fourth-generation iPhone SE will be equipped with a chip that has an identifier of T8140, according to a private account on social media platform X. That identifier is used by both the A18 and A18 Pro chips, and given the iPhone SE is a lower-end device, it is very likely that the device will be equipped with the A18 chip out of those two options.

The account also said the next iPad Air models will have an M3 chip, and that the iPad 11 will have an A16 chip instead of the previously-rumored A17 Pro chip.

The account has a good track record of sharing iOS-related information, but it has had some occasional misses. We continue to respect the account owner's request to not link to its posts, as they wish to remain anonymous and maintain a low profile.

Back in October, 9to5Mac independently reported that the next iPhone SE would be equipped with an A18 chip, so there are now multiple sources claiming this.

Apple will likely announce the new iPhone SE by March or April. Rumored features for the device include a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, a USB-C port, a single 48-megapixel rear camera, and the first Apple-designed 5G modem. With the A18 chip, and a rumored 8GB of RAM, the device is also expected to support Apple Intelligence.

The current iPhone SE looks similar to the iPhone 8, with outdated features such as a Touch ID button, Lightning port, and thick bezels around the display. The current iPhone SE has an A15 Bionic chip, so the A18 would be a significant upgrade. Pricing starts at $429, but at least a slight price increase seems probable for the next model.

The SE 4 is going to be a huge hit, that’s for sure!
If it's spec'd as rumored and is priced around $479-$499, then sales should be better than prior SE models, but it won't sell as well as the main iPhone 16 line up. For a lot of people, the monthly installment difference between an SE and iPhone 16, 16 Pro, or 16 Pro max is neglible. And they get to show off their iPhone 16. That rear camera arrangement is unmistakable.

Mines is three times as long as yours 😂

I think it could be a big hit especially with people currently on an older iPhone - 12 or 13, perhaps, maybe even Pros - who want/need to upgrade (perhaps because of battery issues) and who aren't too bothered about having an advanced camera system.

A18 makes sense given volume production and likely lifespan of the product, wouldn't have been surprised by A17Pro though, maybe that's going in the next base model iPad given that it's gone into the iPad mini.

It is supposed to be Apples budget phone to compete with Android budget phones, but what do you call budget? I suppose in Apples eyes, compared to other Iphones it is budget.

I have an Oppo phone that cost me £140 almost five years ago, and it is still fine, it does everything that is needed. it may be a little slower than a lot of phones these days.

If i have to buy a new phone in the near future, what do Apple think I am going to do, buy an Apple SE for around £450, because all they will do is change the $ to a £, but keep the same numbers or buy another Oppo that may have more storage, more memory and maybe a bit faster certainly a larger screen for around the £150 mark?

A new Iphone SE will apeal to people with older SE phones, but I don't think it will make people on Android phones change.

As for touch ID being outdated, I thought it was just a fingerprint sensor, am i worng in that?

I will keep my five-year-old Oppo going for as long as I can, sorry Apple, I am certainly not going to pay £400 for a phone, I would hesitate to go over £200 these days.

“SE is a lower-end device” and in two years thanks to that maybe i will buy SE4.
Similarly M4 MacbookAir, going to be shiny and new and pretty good with better battery time and then minor improvements. It is going to be awesome just base M2/M3s will sell like hotcakes at retail stores.

I am looking forward to the SE4. I don’t really care about the camera. I currently have 2 phones an iPhone 12 for personal use and a cheap unlocked Android phone for work calls and text. If the price is right I will use the 12 as my work phone and use the SE4 as my main phone.

I was hoping SE 4 would have more upgrades than usual for an SE.

But considering the fact that Apple has probably had to spend considerable r&d money to downgrade iPhone 14 to have the rear camera-setup go from dual to single, I'm expecting this to be the most expensive SE 4 yet.. even though it's just a single rear camera iPhone 14 with 8/128 and Apple Intelligence support.

Previous SEs adopted older designs and exterior components 1/1 and just got upgraded a few internals which kept the price down.

But an iPhone 12/13/14 with a single-camera setup is actually, in a sense, a new design.

Despite the camera downgrades, it is still a decently upgraded iPhone 14 with 8/128, Face ID, MagSafe, USB-C, and a few other, less important internal upgrades.

And with no 64GB option anymore, I can see SE 4 jumping $479, or even $499.

For iPhone buyers, that's still a pretty good deal.

I still hope they could add the 15's or 16's display upgrades. Even without Dynamic Island, that would add a ton of value. Probably won't happen. But maybe, since they already had to redesign the back?

God forbid they downgrade it to the one from iPhone 12, or take it back to LCD.

In English speaking countries and Japan where the iPhone market share is around 60%, I agree with you. But there are many other markets where most people want a modern iPhone but can’t afford one.

In my home country for example, government charges 96% tax on smartphones, and because of that, many people still use 8 or 10 year old iPhone models. A new iPhone SE that doesn’t look like their iPhone 7s will be a big seller over there.

This phone will sell very well in places like Brazil, Turkey, Eastern Europe, India, Indonesia. It will also make a big difference in Africa. Gaining market share is much easier if your baseline is around 5% to 10%. In western markets where most people can afford a flagship or a regular model, it’s very hard to gain market share if you already own over 50%, but the vast majority of potential customers live in other parts of the word, and Apple can easily gain hundreds of millions of new customers if they release a nice and affordable device.

Sounds really shallow and vain. Do normal humans actually care about that kind of thing? If they do our society is even more sad and messed up than I thought.

Have you.. been outside lately?

Eh, it depends on the group. No one I hang around or work with really cares about smart phones, shows them off or talks about them.

My teenagers don't really care anything about what model they have.

It was even reported as far as July 2024 that iPad 11 is going to get A16

In July of 24, there were no definitive word on what the requirements were.
Historically, low-end iPads are used in schools and shutting schools out of Apple's AI seems unlikely.
Heck, even iPad mini got a tiny upgrade just to be able to use AI.

Yet it showed that the Mini was getting the A17 ( and the first bit of evidence to show the Mini 7 getting the A17)

Expecting it to have the same chip as the non Pro models of the 16 series. Should be more than enough and it will definitely support Apple Intelligence. Also will not be surprised to see a hike in price to $499.

This is probably just chip binning. When they manufacture silicon, there are often defects, and rather than trash them, they just deactivate the malfunctioning part of the chip and use it as a lower powered version. The A18 seems to just be an A18 Pro with a deactivated GPU core. The iPhone SE will likely contain the same processor but with a deactivated CPU core too.

A18, a rumoured notch, 48mp camera that allows the 2x punch in that to me is more important than the ultra wide I almost never use...It really doesn't seem like it's missing much over the iPhone 16. We'll have to see about the Apple modem performance in the first iteration vs Qualcomm though.

I guess it'll have that half year sweet spot before the iPhone 17 adds ProMotion.
