Shouldn’t the headline read “GNSS” and not “GPS”? GPS is US NAVSTAR satellites only. I’m pretty sure that Apple has added support on their chips for Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou, etc. That’s called - Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). 😉
Since everyone uses the term "GPS" for satellite-assisted geolocation, that technicality you mention (which I know nothing about myself) would make the headline less useful because most people have no idea what GNSS is. It's like referring to any facial tissue as Kleenex or any cotton swab on a stick as a Q-Tip.

So basically identical to the iphone 16 save the dynamic island and ultra wide view lens, for almost half the price?

Yeh righght. Not gonna happen.
Worse screen and no Camera Control

Also, no mmWave 5G in the US

Comparing the $599 14 to a possible $429 to $488 SE 4, isn't a 1 for 1 comparison, as SE 3 starts at 64 Gb and 14 starts at 128 Gb.

If you compared the the same capacity of each with 128 Gb, the SE increases to $479 vs 14's $599.

With the big upgrade to SE, I'd bet we see the starting price increase to least $479 for 64 Gb, and $529 for a 128 Gb, meaning it will only be $70 cheaper than 14 at the same capacity, but lacking ultra wide rear camera, probably mmWave 5G, maybe no U1 chip, and no 512 Gb option.

Why would anyone spend $600 on the iPhone 14 if this launches this spring at roughly $450?

What if they discontinue the iPhone 14 and they sell this new SE at $549, and introduce a mini a year later at $449?

Besides the mentioned value benefits, to me it’s interesting to imagine apple able to put all the modem tech on a SoC, and the potential for the “iPhone XX” or whatever they call it to be crazy thin like the rumors, or even perhaps putting the tech into mbp on the future for the option to use your mac over cellular.

My opinion only but I will not get a SE 4 due to its size.

It will never happen although I can only wish for a smaller phone with the latest tech.
do you have an apple Watch?
the combination of the watch (to replace communication and notification functions of an iPhone) and an iPad Mini for reading and answering email, may be the way to go.

I have to wonder— since the current rumors are suggesting the next Apple Watch SE is going to have a plastic body to cut costs, could the next iPhone SE also have a plastic body? It would make sense if Apple is trying to keep the price to around $450

I would be hesitant because of the cellular modem. I had an iPhone X with the Intel modem, crashed all the time. Sold it and bought the Verizon iPhone X (that one had the Qualcomm modem), modem crashing stopped.

Will be interesting to see Apple's first 5G modem/chip. If everything goes well, expecting to see cellular MacBooks in 1 to 2 years after the SE is launched.

I don't understand who buys the SE. It's friggin' tiny and the one person I know who has one has to expand the text size to read it. What's worse is that developers have to support that screen size which has a significantly smaller view port thus screwing up UI design that works fine for every other phone on the market including Android phones.
I had the first SE and I’m using the second generation SE right now and I’ll get the next one. I don’t understand why anyone would pay the price for a 16.

SE sounding like a massive upgrade all thanks to Apple Intelligence requiring it to be so. Might be a better value than the standard 16 line tbh.
Yeah, I plan upgrading my daughters iPhone 13 to this, mainly to have compatibility into the future with Apple intelligence features.

Sounds like The Apple SE4 price is being partially subsidized since it’s a beta test platform for this new Apple 5G modem.
Also I think Apple want to flood the market with Apple Intelligence capable hardware, they will monetise AI in a few years and need capable hardware out there.

Pretty much this. I mean they have 6 generations of iPads ( and another rumored iPad Air coming out at the same time as the SE) and pretty much every single Apple silicon Mac which supports Apple Intelligence compared to only 3 generations of iPhone so the SE will get this for sure

would it be a problem if they offer the phone cheap? If it’s anything like the intel modem then it might be slower and slightly more power hungry. this could be mitigated by using a downclocked A18 to maintain battery life expectations.
Depends on how it handles 4G. 99.99% of the time my iphone is set to 4G only, because 5G only makes sense when the 4G cell is overstressed. Otherwise it performs worse unless you stay put, close to a 5G tower, with a clear line of sight.

What you said may be true of MMWave 5G but C-band 5G has similar range as LTE and I get almost 1Gbps down or higher depending on the time of day

An Apple modem? Sure, Jan. 🙄

I remember reading that rumor last year… and the year before that… and the year before that… and the year before that… and the year before that… and

I would not bet against Apple's silicon team, given how they've outpaced the industry as newcomers who surprised even Intel right out of the gate with the M1 chip.
It won't be easy to match Qualcomm without infringing on its patents but the major benefits will come from miniaturization and the efficiency of a self contained system on a chip.
A complete SoC will bring always-on connectivity to Apple Watch, iPad and Mac and enable the kind of miniaturization needed for Vision glasses.
Yeah and Apple has poach hired a lot of Qualcomm employees who have experience with RF modem technology. I think Apple has found a breakthrough or else they would not be aggressively going forward with there own custom 5G modem

Yes I definitely would not bet against Apple and there Quest to save money 💰

All very nice, but it'd even better if they'd make the screen a bit bigger

The iPhone screens are all just too darned small these days
