Apple may add the Dynamic Island to the SE 4 to make it look modern. We will find out what tricks apple has up there sleeves for this one.
No, Apple won't do that. Dynamic Island is the language of new design. Just like TouchID with FaceID and notch. It wasn't about TouchID being significantly cheaper to produce, but about ensuring that the consumer buying the new models didn't feel like they were playing in the same league as SE. The easiest and cheapest way was to use an old structure that had already made money. It will be the same now. Exactly 12-15 are not drastically different. It doesn't matter whether they choose a matte or glossy back. The front of the device has, and this one will clearly communicate - I am an old solution, I belong to the previous language. Still iconic, but not the newest.

We really need to come up with a better word for when the sale of a cheaper product results in fewer sales of a more expensive product than "cannibalise." I live in a country where cannibalism was occurring within the past few hundred years on a regular basis and the horror associated with such things needs to be preserved.
Just wondering: if eating defeated ennemies is supposed to give you their strength and intelligence, is it a way to even the odds or something?

Hard to see se selling when I see the normal/pro version with good prices
I only bought the other SEs because they had a small screen, a Home button and Touch ID. If this doesn't have a small screen and/or a Home button and Touch ID, I'll just buy whatever newest iPhone Pro they have.

Tim will be all too happy about this, worry not

It's likely their plan honestly

If it has A18 and 8GB for Apple Intelligence, and the 48mp sensor that allows a native-ish centre 12mp 2X crop, I'm not even sure what I'd be missing from the base 16. The ultrawide, but I wouldn't miss it that much. Dynamic Island is a question mark.
SEs always feature several many lower quality or previous generation internal components that you wouldn’t expect or even realize unless you go through the entire spec sheet (which usually isn’t even available at launch).

Apple will spec and price it exactly to create something that’s enticing enough to sell in the millions but not give it so much value that it makes the >$799 models seem pointless or less value/$

Having gone through the spec sheets of Watch SE and the two latest iPhones SE, I am definitely not losing any sleep over this 4th generation SE.

Only the first iPhone SE was great when it launched. All subsequent SE products have been low value cash grabs that should have launched at $100s less than they did.

I don’t expect much from this. But I’m sure the finishes/colors and presentation will be on point and fool a lot into thinking they win more than they lose by getting an SE4 over a midrange or Pro iPhone.

It looks like the Slim and SE will being using Apple modems instead of from Qualcomm. Something else to consider.

Apple is accelerating its move away from reliance on Qualcomm. In 2025, two new iPhone models will ditch Qualcomm's 5G chips and adopt Apple's in-house 5G chips: the iPhone SE4 (1Q25) and the ultra-slim iPhone 17 (3Q25).

Apple Intelligence.
And cameras.

They’re going to use a SOC that’s somewhat recent for OS support (the phone will be sold for 2-3 years and still requires some years of OS support afterwards) but will not use one that supports newest AI features.

They can use the chassis and design of XR or 11 with rounded edges. Then it will look less modern than 14 / 15 / 16 which makes it easier for Apple to sell more expensive models.
The whole SE product concept and business/profit model relies, in large part, on utilizing current production facilities, machinery, molds, parts, etc.

Being that Apple stopped making new iPhones 11 around when iPhone 14 launched, Apple would have to shift parts of it production "backwards" to, once again, make new iPhone 11 chassis for SE4 if the SE4 is a XR/11 rehash.

That would be far more expensive than simply utilizing parts and production set up to make iPhones 12/13/14/15, as they are all far more similar to each other than they are to iPhone 11 and older.

But I'm still betting on an iPhone 14 rehash:

Unbeknownst to most, Apple radically redesigned the internals inside iPhone 14 to be more repairable
. This was due to Apple and consumers being faced with excessively difficult and expensive display and back glas replacements on iPhones 12 and 13, something we have to assume cost Apple a lot.

Sticking to the overhauled 14 chassis, it would also be far easier for Apple to meet sustainability and Right to Repair demands as they increase in the next years.

SE4 being an iPhone 14 rehash also perfectly aligns with the USB-C deadline on december 28th, whereafter Apple probably removes both SE3, iPhones 13, and 14 from the line-up because of their archaic charging ports (could also happen at iPhones 16 launch).

These rumors make a lot of sense.

Apple definitely needs this device. There is no mid-range offering (except the ancient current SE phone design which dates back to the iPhone 6 chassis).

Hoping it comes in at sub 400... cos' there are plenty of very credible alternatives in the 150-400 price range.

The very reasons I choose iPhone SE is because 1) it doesn’t have Face ID (Face ID makes it extremely easy for criminals to steal your phone and police officers to violate your privacy and rights and 2) it doesn’t have wireless charging (some members of my family use ICDs — pacemakers and defibrillators).

You’re incorrect about Face ID. While no security system is entirely foolproof, Face ID is a lot more secure than Touch ID which can be fooled by anyone who can get a sample of your fingerprint. But Face ID would require an accurate 3D model of your head, with realistic IR signature and realistic eyes for the “require attention” feature. Not impossible, perhaps, but a hell of a lot of expensive work and far beyond the capabilities of your typical criminal (or police department)!

As for induction charging, just because it exists on the iPhone doesn’t mean you ever have to use it. Just don’t keep any wireless charges in the house if you’re concerned about pacemakers.

If this doesn't have a small screen and/or a Home button and Touch ID, I'll just buy whatever newest iPhone Pro they have.

Apple thanks you for choosing the most profitable iPhone over the much lower-margin iPhone SE.

I buy them for my children. No need to overspend when the SE gets the job done.

All the kids I know get hand-me-down phones from their parents/grandparents/uncles, with a new battery installed if they’re lucky.

(It turns out the #1 feature my nieces look for in an iPhone is the camera capabilities, particularly the 0.5x macro lens, which the 2022 SE doesn’t have!)

SE4 being an iPhone 14 rehash also perfectly aligns with the USB-C deadline on december 28th, whereafter Apple probably removes both SE3, iPhones 13, and 14 from the line-up

There’s no requirement to remove existing devices from sale if they don’t have USB-C. The deadline just applies to any new phone models introduced from December 2024 (2026 for tablets and laptops).

Examples?

Using the camera sensor and lens from many versions back but using a new ISP is definitely one example in the current iteration, but rumours are saying this will get the 48mp sensor. What else was like this?
