iPhone SE (2016) iPhone SE battery expanding again

A friend has an iPhone SE that she bought used. After a year the battery (not sure if was genuine) started expanding and pushing the screen out. It was also showing poor battery life and acting strangely like turning off even though the device said it had 15% or so remaining. So, she got it replaced with a non genuine battery because it was much cheaper.

It's now one year later and exactly the same thing is happening to this new battery. She's not sure whether to bother getting the battery replaced. My question is, is it possible there could be a problem with the actual device that's caused it to damage two batteries now? Or is it more likely that the current battery and the one it came with were just poor non genuine items?

It’s really guessing more than anything for most of us. I would guess two low quality batteries.

Absolutely replace that battery. Swollen lithium ion battery is either bad or beyond it's useful life. Y'all run the risk of it catching fire or exploding. It's best to get a quality replacement, but even a cheap replacement is preferable to a damaged battery.
 
Most likely both batteries are poor quality, or bad charging habits/poor quality of charger maybe.

But definitely get that swollen one replaced ASAP.
 
Get a good quality battery and don't charge with a non certified cable, especially in the car.

iFixit batteries seem to be new, while apple just shoves an unusd battery made years ago into the phone and calls it good.

iFixit batteries are really no different than any other third-party battery, It’s actually the same battery that UbreakiFix stores use to replace in some iPhones, the thing is, there’s a lot of cheap alternative third-party batteries, some of them don’t carry the proper voltage/watt capacities At 6.21Wh-3.82V It needs to meet the requirements for that specific phone, and for the regulation of the battery controller.
 
It could be that the battery is while being 'new', it's condition is old. Meaning, as mentioned above, it was on the shelves for months/years(?).

This is a big problem when you are looking for batteries for older devices. Some suppliers are selling batteries that were made like 4 years ago.

yes, this is what i meant

iFixit seems to source fresh batteries

Apple batteriee seem to have sat around for years on the shelf


I've had far superior performance from iFixit batteries, much better than batteries replaced by Apple

I often read on this forum people posting about the new battery Apple installed lasted a shorter amount of time than the original one.
