Actually no, not really.

I don't know what definition of "crippled" you are using, but it isn't one I know.

I am now using an SE, and can promise you that although it doesn't have 3D Touch, the front camera isn't as good, and the Touch ID is half a second slower, the phone doesn't appear to be crippled.
Let me clarify - 6S has all those features you have listed. SE came after 6S and misses those therefore Apple put different parts in that device making it "slower", "less features" etc. on purpose compared to their flagship 6S. -> they have crippled it a bit. If you don't like the word crippled then lets use different one - restricted.
I'm not sayign that the SE is bad. NOT AT ALL! Its wonderful device for what it is. I'm saying that its not 6S in smaller size! Thats all!
Give me iPhone 7 in 4" factor and I'm all over it.

Yes - i realise the 6S has all the features listed. But I'm taking issue with the word "crippled" because its completely the wrong word.

Suppose I twisted my ankle - in a race, you would have an advantage over me, but it would be marginal. You presumably wouldn't say I was crippled. Or maybe you would.

My point is that the omission of those features does not put the SE at such a great disadvantage that it could possibly or reasonably be described as crippled.

Interesting that you said the SE is slower than the 6S - can you explain why that is, given that they both have the same A9 chip and 2GB of RAM?

As I said above, the only really meaningful differences are the lack go 3D touch and the inferior front camera. Of those, I can live without 3D touch to save $250, and I never use the front camera anyway.

Guys I figured it out. People don't want this SE that they feel is too old and slow. Here's what they want:

Completely new design all around
4" 4K OLED screen
Apple A10 chip
4GB RAM
16MP iSight camera with OIS
8MP front cam
3D Touch
Waterproof casing

Prices (in full)

32GB $99
128GB $199
256GB $299

So yeah, if this phone was released instead of the SE, maybe then people would finally be happy. Of course they're also living in a fantasy world.

Maybe next year...but with different prices of course and only 2GB RAM.

I won't be surprise...

First the idea to launch this product is :
1. Maintain the market of 4-inch lover
2. Compete with china products in emerging markets (china, india. south east asia except singapore)

Where did they launch it ? USA, Singaore, Hongkong, UK, Japan, Australia which obviously consists of new flagship iphone lovers.

Looks like there is a little bit of inconsistency between their target market and their actual distribution countries

Don't get me wrong I love iphone... It is the best mobile phone I have ever used in my life and I don't see myself having another brand

But... since iphone 6, due to currency depreciation. it costs 30% - 50% more expensive than it used to be... It doesn't make sense to me if an iphone costs the same as a motorbike... no matter how much I love the product...

I almost forced myself to switch to any affordable android products until suddenly apple launched SE

I did pre-order through black market online store... i am getting it at the end of this week

Very sad having need to depart with my 4S... no dent, no scratch, no crack... however it is just too slow nowadays...

trust me apple won't release any newer 4 inch phone until march 2017... releasing a more powerful 4 inch within 6 months will simply kills apple credibility....

Maybe in June 2017, Apple will release 3 screen sizes (4.3", 5.0" and 5.8") using the same redesigned body.

I loved my iPhone5 and 5s, and I am a bit pissed, I did not know that the 4inch phone would have almost the same specs as the 6s. A assumed it would be a lower spec phone like the 5c. I would trade my iPhone 6s for a se if I could. Never liked big phones, I have my iPad for the bigger screen need. I and in case you wonder, its a company phone, and not just to sell and get another. But if I had known, I would have waited the 6 more month and been a happier iPhone owner.

P.S. I think the iPhone 6s is ugly, slippery as soap and I hate the camera nipple.

OK, can someone please explain why *anyone* should expect sales to be higher than the rest of the line? First, no one wanted a 4" (supposedly), now it's bad because it's not a top seller? Sheesh!

4" clamorer here. I thought I'd add my story to help illustrate the types of customers Apple is dealing with here. I have a 4S and have been praying for a smaller phone since the 6 was rumored. I was very pleased with the direction apple took for the SE (although I would have preferred it to have the body of the 4S, of course, but that's just not going to happen.) However, I simply had to improve my situation in February and transferred my number to a Redmi 2 I got for $120. Now I'd like to get back to Apple, but I'm comfortable enough that I can switch whenever I want. I can't see waiting for the SE 2 but I can wait for the 7 announcement to confirm I'd rather have the SE, etc. I pay cash for phones, so I'm not wasting an upgrade. I think it's good for Apple to have to really demonstrate value with this phone, and I'm glad they're in a strong financial position so they can afford to sell to people like me over time instead of en masse.

Whatever, whatever, whatever... and whatever anyone says, it will sell by the boatload. Usual doom and gloom merchants, no one cares, seriously - it's a great phone, and will take more than a few skeptics to change that.

The only lustre that it lacks is on the matte bezel chamfer... and yes, the word is lustRE

I'll agree that SE buyers are not day-1, line up at the door, buyers. I'm probably going to get one or two when I get some other odds and ends tied up. If this had been out last year I would have snapped one up rather than the Nexus 6.

...but you still bought it? You loved the phone before it, but still bought the 6s?

I think it was Apple who said there were 30 million folks ( or was it a third of iPhone users who didn't want a big phone) craving for a new 4" phone. Personally, I don't think many want a 4" phone, they just a big screen in a small form factor, something that Apple has not managed yet.

It'll still sell in boatloads, irrespective of all your clever chatter and armchair forecasting.

I tried out a 6S, and my friendgirl just bought one - she uses her phone constantly as a tiny computer, I use my phone primarily as a phone that can also check email and hotspot my other Apple stuff when necessary. So I'm very psyched to have the SE. As I'm a dimwit, I don't know how to switch out SIM cards, so I'll have to take it to AT&T tomorrow before I can power it up and try it out.

I never used 3D touch much when I was trying out the 6S - but for the gurus, is it likely it wasn't implemented on a smaller screen because there's not enough real estate for it? I have no idea because I just thought it was a useless gimmick. Also I'd put on a glass screen protector, which interfered with the functionality for whatever reason.

Also, personally I hope it's not very popular - if Apple doesn't come out with a new SE next year, then hopefully that will extend the life of my SE because Apple won't EOL it so fast with an iOS update. I'm hoping to get a good five years out of it, maybe more. I was very bummed about the phones just getting bigger and bigger - glad I ditched the 6S and Apple released the SE.

As far as the size and all, I think it looks great - "old design" or not. And it's incredibly light - with a clear case to show off my perty "rose gold" phone and a glass protector to keep my keys from scratching up the actual screen in my pocket. So thanks Apple for allowing me to get a new phone I'm comfortable using and carrying around.

Why would Apple put 3D Touch on SE ? It will simply increased the selling price and become somewhat un-affordable for the emerging countries where in the apple will lose the battle with cheaper products like xiaomi...

Emerging countries are more price sensitive compared to developed countries.

So it's unfair to compare SE and 6S/6S+.. They are totally a different market.

One thing confusing... why would apple launch SE in the developed countries instead of going directly to emerging countries like India and South east asia ? Why would apple need to differentiate the launch schedule gap for approximately 2 months ?

They have them back in stock in my nearest Apple Store - at least I assume they do as the website is saying available to pick up today.

I'm on my way now - if they've run out by the time I get there, that would suggest high demand still.

Let us know when screen technology evolves to the point where we can see razor sharp text and great looking non fuzzy images. :p

Still sold out here in London.

Well, if you twisted your ankle in a race I would probably still use that word as you would have disadvantage. Mind you, english is not my first language so i don't wanna have this conversation about one word so lets pick different one - UP TO DATE? SE is not up-to-date when it comes to design, TouchID, 3D touch and some other elements when compared to the flagship device 6S. I hope this is little more clear what I am trying to say.
As I said before, SE is wonderful device especially for that price however it doesn't look like 6S and it doesn't have all the features of 6S. So, what i would like Apple to do is to release iPhone 7 in 3 formats. 4" 4,7" & 5,5". Then I will be super excited to get 4".
SE is wonderful but its still 5S with just updated internals. I hope that no one can despute that. (put 5S next to SE and most people won't be able to tell you which one is which)

I think the SE will be a success for its own category. Great price and great phone!

Lets hope iPhone 7 will give us 3 options and Apple will keep the SE in the cheaper category. That way everyone wins

I don't think the iPhone SE was designed for emerging markets. Yes... it's the cheapest "new" iPhone ever released... but it's still $400.

There are Android smartphones that sell for $100 in emerging markets.

The iPhone SE simply replaced the $450 iPhone 5S while coming in at $50 cheaper. That's great... but it's far from a "budget" world phone.

The average selling price for Android phones worldwide is $215

iPhone is $691

So again... I don't think Apple is targeting emerging markets... even with the cheaper iPhone SE.
