I find it so strange that people on here will upgrade and positively wet their pants with excitement when the S-cycle phones are released in the same casing as the old (4 --> 4S, 5 --> 5S, 6 --> 6S) but all of a sudden it's criticised and called an old phone when it's 5S --> SE.

Makes no sense at all.
I find it strange that what other people do bothers you so much.

"We believe this is due in part to lackluster demand for smaller-size smartphones"

Yet, prior to the SE launch, analyst were claiming high demand for a smaller 4 inch phone. Ridiculous!

if they just retooled it to look like the 6, it would have gone off the charts... but i'm sure apple didn't want to cannibalize its flagship.

Well, I opted for an Xperia Z5 Compact instead. I'm no fan of Android, but the SE was a bit too much meh! to bother and Windows Phone is obviously going down the drain. Options for those in search of good 4-4,5" phones sure are limited.

This is surprising since all the fans of tiny phones said that everyone was waiting on a new 4" phone because most people do not want a 4.7" or 5.5" screen on their phone.

It looks like Apple will not be going back to offering only a 4" phone in the future if sales on this one are lackluster. I'm guessing by now the sweet spot for size is the 4.7" and honestly if they just cut down the bezels on those things a tiny screen wouldn't even be necessary for a compact phone.

I would image that the line up outside the Apple store or pre-order online the second you are able type of customer is not interested in something that is not the absolutely latest/best option. While there may be demand for a 4" iPhone, I personally would have been very surprised if those customers purchased it right away. The real indicator will be how sales are in 3 or 6 months.

I will be purchasing an iPhone SE, but am waiting for some sort of rebate or network switch deal.

The SE is designed to capture people who are unwilling or unable to pay for the premium level iPhone. As a result the majority of these people will not be the type of customer to rush out of the gates to buy one, they will instead get one when their existing phone contract ends, their existing phone is no longer usable, and when they have the money to do so.
This. My five year old iPhone 4 is falling apart (yay AssistiveTouch), I've already offloaded my mobile internet use to an iPad Mini with 4G and I was looking for a new small (but capable) phone for the next five years. Without the SE I would've considered an Android phone. The SE is Apple's way of keeping people like me inside their ecosystem.

They released a phone with a 4 year old body and 6 month old insides. I don't think they even paid a great amount of attention to it at their own keynote. It's a device geared towards those who are still hanging on to their older phones and get them to upgrade their phone.

Of course it's not going to have the same impact as a flagship launch.

Can't wait to get mine this week.

Where are all the people that wanted a new 4 inch iPhone?

(yes, its not exactly 'new', its a refined 5s).
No it's not! The 5s has polished chamfered edge, and that's the main reason why I'm not intersted in SE, same goes for iPad Pro 9.7 potruding lens, such a great devices and failed miserable at the end
If SE had the complete 5s design and same power specs like the 6s at same price, I would've choose SE, because it has more pretty and newer design, the 6s uses iPhone 2G-3GS design from 2007, while the 5s has the same similar design from the 2010 iPhone 4

Yeah, and the lines for the Tesla wouldn't have been reported upon at all if it hadn't been for the Apple/iPhone reporters dispatched to watch the lines at the nearby Apple Stores. How much you want to bet that every person who stood in line at Tesla later went to visit the neighboring Apple Store, and vice versa?
Very likely! I hope Apple is able to form a partnership with Tesla instead of competing with them. They're both going to need all the help they can get to keep pushing back against big oil, the big car companies, and all the lobbyists and special interest groups. I'm worried Apple would spread themselves too thin with an electric car project and that Tesla could end up as a playground for Android. I think they're a good match and have somewhat similar corporate values. I like Musk even though he can be pretty arrogant at times and doesn't always have the best stage presence. He's probably as close to a Steve Jobs figure as we've got at the moment. All that being said, Apple is good at coming in after something has been brought to market such as MP3 players, smart phones, etc and making them much better than they were before. I just think the nature of what they're attempting is so much bigger and car projects are notoriously difficult to hide due to the scale involved, so I think they are very early and if they do come to market, it won't be until around 2021 or 2.

Apple releases small phone 6 months after big phone, less people buy, surprise is had?

I'm sure it's a huge surprise to the people who couldn't get over the fact that Apple followed other phone makers lead and made the phone bigger, the people who remained convinced that everyone thought 4 inches was the perfect size.

Just curious... why all this venom over the phone? If you don't want it ... fine. But if you do, and if sales are lackluster ... why the heck is it out of stock in every stinking Apple store in northern California?? Sorry. Vented there.

For me the iPhone 6s form-factor and size are the perfect phone size. Not surprised that a small phone that just looks like a 5s isn't flying off the shelves.

Apple launched the iPhone SE last Thursday on the same day as Tesla began accepting reservations for its lower-cost Model 3, and consumer excitement was unsurprisingly geared towards the highly-anticipated electric vehicle. In fact, many Tesla locations in the U.S. and Europe had longer lineups than nearby Apple retail stores.

$30,000 vs $400. A man who pre-orders a 30k car, can buy a 400-buck phone next-door. Nobody to blame

..It's all about the fact that it's targeted for ~30% of iPhone users, many of them still being on contract with their older phones.

Why would anyone buy a phone that has last year's technology, cheap (sort of) as it may be? I think it's highly likely that there will be a 4-inch 7 in September, leaving the lineup as 7+ (5.5"), 7 (4.7"), 7- (4") and 6S+, 6S, SE.

Last years specs that outrun this year's Android flagships

Lackluster yet there isn't a 64gb space grey Verizon to be found anywhere near me. No Verizon store got them on release day and the Apple store's inventory was wiped out fast. I live just outside Boston

Just going to point out that whilst demand is apparently low, I was unable to waltz into the store on release date and purchase the desired model as they'd all gone! Instead I've had to order online and will be waiting until the 15th to get it!
