Which phone should be the next?

Why? I’ve owned both and I found them to be practically identical. That’s why I bought a used X when my XS got stolen. It is cheaper too.

If I were the OP, I’d definitely get a used X (just make sure the battery health is still good). It'll still be perfectly usable for a few years to come. I still have mine as a backup.
I agree in terms of performance but all XS's are at least 1 year newer, so less battery wear and possibly a year or 2 of extra support depending on how long you plan to use it for.

I'm a huge fan of the SE 2020, but it's not a phone for everyone.

It all depends on what you're going to do with your new phone.

Light usage, a bit of social media, messaging and a few calls? Use a mac or an iPad for everything else? Get an SE 2020, it will be perfect. I can personally confirm that the camera of the SE 2020 is actually surprisingly good. There's a whole thread on here somewhere (dozens of pages long) about iPhone SE 2020 photography, if I remember correctly.

Are you going to use your phone for pretty much everything and don't use a mac or an iPad at all? Get an iPhone 12, or, as others have suggested, wait until September and get an iPhone 13 for the same money.

I’d say go straight for the top. 12 Pro or Pro Max. Otherwise what’s gonna happen is you’re going to buy a 12 or 11 and then you’re going to realize how much better iOS is when you have multiple devices and you’re going to regret not getting the best. FOMO is a ***** man. I’d add an Apple Watch S6 while you’re at it.

No regerts.

Thanks for all of you. Here is another question though, would it be more value efficient to buy 12 to last 5 years? Or an older used version (which one?) and then replace every 2 years?

I would say rather just got straight 12 and take it from there, the A14 chip has got plenty juice and you may find that you don’t have to replace it for a long time.

At least with the 12 you have both 4GB RAM and a chip that is pretty much a lite version of the M1 chip.

The only older phone I would recommend is the 11 Pro Max due to its huge battery (for an iPhone).
