I live in a rural area with decent, but not great reception.

Currently dealing with a 6S Plus that is constantly having reception issues - my former SE never had such issues.

I'm considering getting either another SE or a 7/7 Plus to replace the 6S Plus, but I want to get whichever has better reception.

I'm on Verizon, with some LTE coverage, but solid 3G coverage.

Which of the two would be better, based strictly on reception?

I've never had an iPhone that had brilliant reception, they have all been average or below average. From experience, I don"t think an iPhone is the one to plump for if you live somewhere that suffers from poor signal strength. Some other phones are so much better in this regard. Just my 2c.

Agree

Although the best reception I've witnessed personally on an iPhone was a 5c

I agree with this statement. So perhaps it might be the material that affects it? So you'd possibly get better reception from the jet black iPhone 7? Just a thought, I'm probably wrong.
