iPhone seems to be bulging, will Apple replace the whole phone or just the battery? I'm still paying month-to-month AppleCare+ with Thieves and Loss protection

it's not that bad yet and the phone works fine... didn't really notice it until I took off the Apple leather case(from Apple Store, bought at the same time as the phone) and saw it.... when I place it on a glass table, it wobbles... been getting worse in the last few weeks.

if it's just a battery replacement, will they do this at the Apple Store?

Thanks!

If it's warping, it could have/be damaging the logic board and other components.
I'd say they would swap it, depending on the age of the phone.

Never had AC+ so don't know the ins and outs.

I'd get it looked at sooner rather than later though, the last thing you want is a battery exploding/leaking 😳

You’ve got yourself a spicy pillow. Please be careful, don’t charge it whatsoever, and get it addressed asap. It’s very dangerous. They will likely swap it.

Either way it should be a same day fix. Make an appointment of course. I’ve never had a battery replacement but I’ve had screen and whole phone replacement and it was pretty easy. As others said fix this now. It’s not safe to be in your house or car.

You should insist on a full replacement, which they should do anyways for this type of issue. Also, take care of this ASAP.

I had an iPhone 5 back in the day that developed a swelling battery which caused the screen to bulge outward.
They replaced the battery and all was good again.

They will (most likely) replace the entire phone. Swelling batteries require particular handling and devices are sent to a central location equipped to handle their extraction (special tools, fire suppression systems, etc).

I agree with the not charging, however it's not as dangerous as you think. I've had three iPhone 5's replaced due to swelling batteries and was informed on the last go around that the battery comes encased in a sleeve. This sleeve encapsulates the battery and is designed to expand with the battery. As long as that sleeve is NOT punctured there is no extraordinary risk.

But yeah, it's the charging (particularly sitting on charger for hours/days on end) that exacerbates the swelling.

Most likely the customer won't have to insist. Every time I took my iPhone 5 in for battery swelling it was replaced. Old phone was sent to a central location for removal of the battery.

I had three, I'm currently on the fourth one (not my primary iPhone).

An alternate method is discharging the battery fully and time. With my current iPhone 5, a couple years ago Apple informed me that they would no longer service it. So, I discharged the battery fully and stuck it in the garage in a fire resistant place (concrete). It sat in the garage unused for two years. I did the same to my wife's iPhone 5.

I've done this before with earlier iPhone 5's that have had swelling batteries. Just letting it sit with zero charge for a very long time reduces the swelling.

Both iPhone 5's are currently functioning fine, although I do not charge them very much as I do not use them much.
