To clarify...

Hey guys,

sorry to bump an old thread, but i still haven't found what i'm looking for, and want to clarify a few details.

First, many of you have wondered what type of school i go to. I go to a public school in the US. But, we were recognized as a "Blue Ribbon School", so many administrators and teachers let that go to their head. They have a rigid military-like thinking that they think they need to be very very strict in order to keep that title.

I've heard horror stories of people who have been written up for an "Academic Integrity Violation" after getting their phone confiscated. The phone was searched and they were written up because they had vocab flash cards on their phone. it wasn't even test time! I have nothing like that on my phone, but i have a lot of religious/spiritual content, and even though they can't comment or say anything about that, I'd feel humiliated and violated that i had someone look over extremely personal information.

What i meant by 2 passcodes is that lets say my main lockscreen code is 5759 (which it isn't but just an example). if i type in 5759 at the lock screen, it unlocks like normal. But what i'm looking for is to make a second code that self destructs. So if 5759 unlocks like normal, lets say if 9999 is typed in, it executes code that totally deletes all data. You see what i'm trying to say?

The one thing the teachers are not is technology savvy. If i give them the self destruct code and then my iPhone goes wacko, then I'd be like "WHAT DID YOU DO WITH MY IPHONE!!!!????". and they'd be backpedaling. Technology goes wacko all the time here, and i doubt they'd think twice about the circumstances (i've done a similar thing before and it worked wonders).

I just have to lol everytime you say "self-destruct". "Wipe" would be a much better term in this case.

Also, I love when you talk about how you've done this sort of thing before. That just reminds me of the scene in Tommy Boy when Tommy effs up Richard's car door and says "What'd you do?!?" Excellence

Here's hoping that someone is able to do this sort of passcode-related profile change! I would definitely jump on purchasing something like that :)

At the risk of stating the obvious, the simple solution to your problem is simply not to take your phone to school in violation of school policies...

mossme89, it sounds at this point, your best bet is to talk to your parents. See what they say. For obvious safety reasons, they'd want you to carry your phone. For obvious school reasons, teachers don't want the phones in the classrooms. There has to be a compromise somewhere and maybe talking with your parents you can find a solution together.

Then wouldn't it be a toilet innuendo? ;)

While my parents want me to carry my phone, they are highly conservative in that they tell me to go with it, even if it means violating my privacy. Even in the worst case, i just can't see them suing. So i'm kind of on my own here.

If i refuse to give them the passcode, they'll write me up for insubordination. Their reasoning is somewhat along the lines that they have to make sure i'm not cheating (which is total BS).

This might help and i hope it does!

Have 2 different passwords.. U can set A passcode to unlock your device. But y you can also set a different passcode for individual apps. It's an app called lockdownd

To dispel any rumors on this, I have personally looked into it and ti is against your civil rights, but when you arwe on there campus they can violate them and search anything they will. BS rule if you ask me... what happened to privacy...

You have privacy in your home. PA school got busted for violating that.

At a school one should know there is no expectation of privacy for items you are carrying. Also, you CAN refuse. You will not be arrested but you will be punished by the system. I'm pretty sure that's where the line is drawn.

What safety reasons??? I went to HS before cell phones were popular or even affordable and we never had any problems. You know what happens if someone walks into a school and starts shooting? You freak out! You dont call or txt mommy to say "I'm in danger!", YOU FREAK OUT!

But lets say you are the 1 person that can stay level headed. So kid walks in, shoots someone.
Situations:
1.) You pull out phone to call someone, BAM you get shot, dead.
2.) You pull out phone to call/txt someone, shooter doesn't notice. You call mommy she freaks out come to school, get in way of police and interferes before the police can setup a parameter, BAM someone gets dead.
3.) You pull out phone, call 911. Dispatcher says already know and hangs up, BAM you get shot, dead.
4.) You pull out pho....BAM you get shot, DEAD.
5.) You stay calm, leave phone in pocket and listen to shooter and follow all directions. BAM shooter get snipe by SWAT team, dead.

Basically, there is no situation in which having a cell phone can help you out during class period time. Maybe after school when the office wont know where you should be. But during class time you should be contactable fairly easily.

The only reason to give a cell to a kid at school, is to start the placebo effect. Which is remember from your classes (unless you spent it on phone) happens when you introduce a new element designed to not do anything but make you think it is. I.E. give a kid a cell phone so you feel as though he is more safe. In reality, it would be safer if you gave him a camo shirt...

How does the dispatcher know? Oh, that's right. Someone already called on THEIR cell phone. So if everyone assumes everyone else has one then no one needs to carry one! Great! Lets all never call 911 and assume someone else is going to do everything for us!

Most schools have cell phone rules

most at least here in Michigan want them in the lockers during school hours. if you do that there are no problems. Most kids can't do this  most kids don't need a phone during school. if there parents need them they can simply call the school and vice versa. the school is checking if a student is texting other students during class. if they are the other student can get in trouble. is the student using the device to cheat or help others cheat? another reason the phones should be in the locker. So if the phones are in the locker there is no problem.

What about if you just hide all your apps with sensitive information. You can hide your SMS, Emails, Religious stuff, etc... so that way IF they every take your phone, you can unlock it for them normally, but they'll never find your info anyways. Then if you ever needed to check email or anything you can just search for it.

Seems like the easiest/risk-free way.

Blimey...

Contradictory thoughts about this one.

Firstly, I wish my son's high school (here in England) had banned phones - he might have got better results, and be doing a college course that would get him into any of the careers that he talked about when he was younger. He wasn't on contract, and spent every penny he could get hold of (by any means!) on texts.

I also wish that his city college could ban them - he might not be so far behind in his course (he sends in the region of 6000 texts per month, thankfully now on contract - maybe this isn't unusual for an 18 year old, but I rarely send 6 a week, and I can't see how they can all be outside the classroom...).

On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with a simple rule that says "Phones are allowed. But not to be used in classes or exams. Get caught and we confiscate it".

In a land where there's a constant chorus of "It's my right as an American to be able to ..." (fill in the blanks) I'm amazed that students appear so prone to having their privacy violated quite so easily.

I am in college now, but wow my high school was never like any of your nazi schools. At my you are allowed to have your phone on you, as long as you have it on silent mode while you're in class.

During a test teachers would ask that you bring your phone up to his/her desk and he/she will hand them all back after the test is over.

No one seemed to care during your lunch hour or any of your breaks. The only problem I had was that everybody including teachers wanted to play with my iphone in 2007-2008.

In fact it seems my college has a more strict phone policy than my high school ever had. At my community college, you have your phone out during class...you'd be asked to leave.

My school is about the same way. In fact, in 8th grade, I texted a girl during school (against the rules I know), later that day she got her phone taken away and the teacher that took it looked through it and saw my name. 2 hour detention for me.
Now in 10th grade, if they catch you with your phone, they ask for it. You can expect them to look through it every time, and once a friend of mine noticed texts with cuss words in his phone deleted after he got it back.

That's ridiculous, I know laws don't apply for a closed system like government required school - but that smacks of double jeopardy.

However, if you were my child, you would get a phone that could only type numbers. Any more functionality for a grade schooler or high schooler and its just a toy. You go to school to learn and if the staff needs lee-way to combat your insubordination, then they would have my full support.
