Ok, can we please stop posting threads that have the following words all together in the title "Sensor, iPhone, iChat". It's pissing me off way more then what I need to be. :D I just want a front camera with iChat. That is it, is it really that hard to understand?

All this grand technology and today's iPhone can still scare the bejesus out of you if you're on the phone and get a new voicemail or text message from someone while on the phone. If you've never had this happen, consider yourself lucky. This "smart phone" is so stupid, it can't figure out that my ear is RIGHT NEXT TO THE SPEAKER so there's no need to vibrate and ding at full volume to tell me someone sent me a message. I've damn-near dropped the phone.

Since I'm griping, why can't there be a simple end "beep" after each voicemail. I'll be listening to someone's message and sometimes there's no audible indication that the recording is done playing back, just silence.

I agree with an earlier posting that sometimes when something tries too hard to anticipate what I want, it doesn't do it well and just ends up getting in my way. Some examples of this terrible idea:

- "It looks like you're writing a letter. Do you want help?"
- "There are unused icons on your desktop. Click here to resolve this issue"

My two pennies...

vibrate should be integrated into iCal

iCal should have a checkbox that allows one to set any given event as a "vibrate" event - assuming the iPhone is synced with iCal, then at that time, the phone automatically switches into vibrate mode.

Perfect for when inputting sound-sensitive events, such as meetings, evening performances, etc.

Just a thought.

I'm still disappointed in the UI when it comes to in-car usage for the iPod app. The buttons need to be much bigger, like the entire left and right side of the screen for next/prev track. Also, it's a pain to have to slide to unlock in order to get to the next track.

Since the release of the free Firmware Update 1.1.2 (November 2007), all iPhone users have been able to configure their Home button. One of the configuration options is double-clicking the Home button brings up basic iPod controls - without unlocking the device.

Wow, does it really do that? That is absolutely ridiculous!! Fix that 2.0!!!

- Temperature, ambient light, and proximity sensors to determine if device in a pocket WITH YOU IN THE BACK SEAT OF A CAR WITH YOUR FAVORITE GIRL. :D

- Accelerometer to determine if device..... you know.... ;)

The iPhone can then automatically *********'s parents, and switch to speaker phone to let said parents listen in on the "conversation"....

Whole new meaning for "Smartphone"....

Steve did say that with 2.0 Apple is putting parental controls in the iPhone...

a sensor in the head phone jack

I would love a sensor in the head phone jack. When you put your head phones in this light would show up for you to see where the jack is becasue its kind of annoying guessing where the headphone jack is where there is no light in the room.

Seen this before already. In iTunes there is a movie by Abaline Christian University in Texas promoting the fact that they use the iPhone for edu purposes extinsively and give students and faculty one for use in the edu experience. Pretty cool look into a neat way to use the iPhone. At 14:30 into the video, the girl talking to her mom on the iPhone docks the phone and an iChat session starts. Looks like the same connection screen in the video that is 'mocked-up' at the beginning of this thread.

Edit: Ah, just saw the comment in the opening post about the ACU video.

T-mobile offers a service called hotspot at home which allows you to make calls over voip from your phone over wifi instead of the cell network. this doesn't take minutes, (it costs $9.95 a month) and it's intended for people who don't get a good signal at home. All the phones they offer this plan for have functionality to seamlessly transfer calls over to wifi/voip when in range, and back to the cell network when not in range, all in real time.

This would be something very cool for a provider and apple to work into an iphone. It's a bit more seamless than this patent is talking about though, as this would require plugging into a computer, and then actually talking through the computer, rather than just using the iphone's wifi capability.

Colledge

To be honest, watching the ACU video made me want to go back to school!!

I love the concept, and what intrigues me the most is how CLOSE we are to this happening. Imagine going back to High School, and being handed an iPhone instead of any textbooks, an iPhone that would allow you to handle All of your school work whenever, wherever. Then again, it would be good for the teachers and faculty. They would be able to track where Every student was at any given moment, and would know if they were skipping class, or hiding under the bleachers smoking what they think is pot (oregano trick, hahahaha).

Anyways, lots of potential, lots of benefits, but also No more Privacy!! Lol.

Just expand that out a little further, make it a drop down selection for all ring profiles.
vibrate for when at the opera
loud or equivelent for when you are at the game
silent for the hot date with your dream girl/guy
airplane mode for when travelling
embarassing for when you want to have fun with your friends iPhone and make their ringtone something from WHAM or Right Said Fred etc :)

Don't have an iPhone but i really like the idea, should be a function for all smart devices.

Apple/AT&T should definitely implement a native VOIP system that transparently passes your calls over Wifi when in range. Even inbound calls to your normal phone number will be routed over the internet if you are close to a WiFi hotspot. The calls would not count against your monthly minutes, you would pay a flat rate per month like $10-15 for the service, and it would even save AT&T money because it would free up the cell network. Tmobile has a similar service called Hotspot@home I believe.

Nice idea, but personally I would rather they started building a teleport.

What use is a Teleport if you don't have the device to say "beam me up" to?
I mean you'd have to shout at the teleport operator, if your only that far away you should just walk.

They should find your heart rate and breathing rate and choose the songs from that. So if your exercising you get a quick energetic beat and if you trying to relax the music will be calm and peaceful. This could also work well if you listen to music as you go to sleep, the music could get softer and softer then turn off when you asleep. It could wake you by dynamically adjusting the volume so its not irritatingly load but its enough to wake you up. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to create an attachment for a polar heart rate monitor.

I 100% agree. It never fails in class someone's phone rings and annoys everyone.

I thought about this in church a while ago when Sexy Back started playing. Very awkward.

I would love to just be able to set different times, not just events or on my mac. My schedule would be:

9:00 am - 3:00 pm: vibrate
3:00 pm - 10:00 pm: loud + vibrate
10:00 pm - 9:00 am: off

Also, setting phone to shutdown and startup would be awesome. Helps if you forget tot turn if off at night. Maybe it would only shutdown after 12:00 am if you aren't plugged in.

So much they could do with it :)

Forget the fancy stuff

This is all very well, but at the moment Apple are too lazy to implement an A2DP bluetooth stack. How dumb is that? You have an iPod equipped with Bluetooth that doesn't have the ability to use bluetooth headphones. There are loads of bluetooth headphones out there with microphone (iMuffs for example) which would enable you to fade out and pause iTunes automatically when there was an incoming call. A2DP has been around for years and for some reason Apple refuse to put it into any of their devices. Forget the fancy stuff - sort out the basics first.
Just my tuppenyworth

When you're wearing earbuds with the white cords you're advertising iPod for Apple. Sorry, mate, you're a billboard on a closed platform.

It would be great to be able to use the iPhone a fully functional Voice over IP phone.

The trouble I see this that most units around the wolrd will be sold with the mobile companies heavily subsidising the cost of the phone to get revenue from the user for calls and data usage

If every iPhone user when ever they want to make a call just finds a WiFi capable spot to do it (at home or out) The phone companies aren’t going to be too happy with money they are loosing.

There are 2 possibilities with VoIP though
1) The iPhone gets a good value VoIP service totally independent of AT&T (or other companies around the world). People try to use VoIP where possible to make and receive calls, and they basically run their Mobile number plus their VoIP number.

As long as AT&T makes it's minimum spend on the phone they should be okay... but they'd prefer to keep their customer reliant on AT&T.

2) The iPhone gets VoIP but only from AT&T (or the mobile provider). Now AT&T is still integral to the iPhone experience, but AT&T can offer an increased service (ie: 100 mobile minutes = 1000 voip minutes). Or perhaps they can offer an attractive free home phone replacement.

The added advantage of #2 is that if you leave home it might switch to the mobile network seamlessly (or if your wifi hotspot starts losing too many packets it might switch to the mobile network).

I'm wondering why we're hearing very little about pricing plans... and now apparently there's some plan-pricing announcement by Apple a few days before the phone is released. Perhaps Apple has done something very interesting with VoIP (otherwise - any ideas what the secrecy's about?)
