Appleinsider reports that the supply of iPhones across the U.S. are near sold-out.
The sudden shortfall has been further confirmed by reports from AppleInsider readers. In several cases, their own investigations reported all stores in a given state running out, including Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Many if not all AT&T stores were also said to have run out of inventory.
The exact cause for the shortage is unknown, but could obviously represent short supply or significant demand.

No!

Oh, GOD WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

Is it time to panic? Should I be hoarding food?

Screw it, I'm just going to take down my neighbor. I'm sure he's part of this.

Hoozah!

I've also not been able to find a single iPod Touch (besides the occasional 32gigger) in Sydney either in the last week. I have been keen to buy as I have a gift voucher but to no avail. An alternate explanation might be a shortage of flash memory again....

But a coincidence and new model iPhones would be better...

TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (2317.TW), the world's largest contract electronics maker, plans to ship at least 10 million third-generation iPhones for Apple Inc. (AAPL), a person familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires.

The person, who declined to be named, said Apple will likely launch the new generation iPhone as early as the second quarter.

"Hon Hai is ready to ship anytime. It is just waiting for the nod from Apple," said the person.

Last week, another person familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires that Hon Hai had received an exclusive contract to make an advanced version of the iPhone.

Apple spokeswoman Jill Tan declined to comment Tuesday.

Apple, like many other big personal-computer and consumer-electronics brands, doesn't actually make most of its products. It hires manufacturing specialists - mainly companies from Taiwan that have extensive operations in China - to assemble its gadgets based on Apple's designs. They use parts from other outside suppliers, many of which also are from Taiwan and elsewhere in Asia.

Bank of America said in a recent note that Apple is expected to launch a high- speed wireless version of the iPhone in the second quarter and produce as many as 8 million of the devices in the third quarter.

A shortage nationwide? I can't see how a manufacturer as big as Apple (and it's suppliers) would let that happen. I'd say something is coming. Very soon.

And if a 3G one was gonna come out any time soon why did they launch in Austria and Ireland a few days ago? To make products which wont get sold?

Since I am in Taipei, maybe they could leave one behind for me and they would still have 9,999,999 to ship the US.

Not so much luck in the UK, online Apple store says

"Ready to ship: Within 24 hours"

o2 appears to have stock too.

Maybe Apple is moving inventory overseas in anticipation of a US refresh (overseas to follow)?

The US online Apple store says 'ships in 5-7 days' whereas (as someone noted) the UK says 'ships within 24 hours'.

Does seem odd, and although a US only update would kill sales overseas in the short term, it could be part of a roll out strategy. A 3G update doesn't mesh with the '3 new ads' for the existing phone though, sadly.

Certainly won't help sales figures if it's a genuine shortage due to lack of supply.

It is true. Just go call the Fifth Avenue Apple Store, the San Francisco store and the Chicago store. They'll be out of stock - or at least, they were when I last checked. (Fifth Avenue mentioned they should be getting some iPhones today)

I think they are all over here in Kazakhstan, many of the kids I see have them. And they cost is $1,000 a pop - I decided not to buy one when I upgraded my phone at the weekend, I could not justify that amount.

I don't know

about a hoax. I do know that I was at the Apple store MacArthur Center location, yesterday, for tech support and over heard that they had no iPhones of any type and hadn't since (at least?) Friday.

with Hamburglar.
Lots of companies have shipment shortages between manufacturing batches. I don't think this is anything to interesting.

The 16GB version was just released so Apple will likely want to suck all of those people dry before releasing the new model in June.

We all know the roadmap and I'm sure they won't refresh the iPhone now, and if they do it'll be minor. (Meaning everything stays the same except they add 3G or GPS or larger drives)
