I tried putting the iPad sim inside a 2G and 3G iPhone - neither worked had no way to change the APN to broadband - I was able to put it into a MiFi with no problems

Does that mean that we could put our iPad sim cards in a MiFi and then get a portable wifi signal that could be shared with the iPad and other computers?

Where can I buy a stand-alone, unlocked MiFi? :D

I cut down my AT&T broadband card SIM down, put it in my iPad, changed the APN and it worked. Works pays for the broadband card that I never use so free 3G for me. I also taped the SIM back up and still works in my broadband card

That's what I'm wondering :). You can't really find an unlimited 3G plan in most places, especially for only $30 a month... Which is dirt cheap for unlimited 3G access. The only carrier where I live is AT&T and verizon (verizon sucks in my area), so this would be perfect! There is no sprint/tmobile/anything else to be seen within 125 miles.

So my question is, that no one anywhere has address:

I have an old iphone and my company has blackberry which I despise. I have always wanted a cheap data plan for the iphone so I can have REAL internet on the go. So my question is, is it possible to buy a 3g ipad sim card without buying the ipad? Or buy an ipad, activate the sim, return the ipad saying you lost the sim, lol, and use it in iphone? There has to be a way

What about activating the sim without having an ipad? Since it uses the iphone operating system one would have to convince the iphone its an ipad and activate that portion of the system to allow sim activation and all that?

There has to be a way this is all I want is a reasonable data plan in my iphone!

Any ideas?

Thanks

I would say as long as the iPhone is jailbroken+unlocked it should work because you do need the iPhone to be jailbroken and unlocked in order to alter the APN Settings and bypass iTunes activation.

If you currently have iPhone and wants to cut it up and use it in iPad (or MiFi), you can do so right away as iPad (and MiFi) is unlocked by nature.

I'm pretty sure if you look in the forum that is in the link on the OP. You find that you can make calls from the Ipad 3g.

But you are missing my point. I want to have an ipad sim in the iphone (without buying an ipad) NOT vice versa! :)

Is this possible to buy this from ATT? I guess I could call them up :/

Like I said I could buy an ipad then return it keeping the activated SIM lol.

I'm sure eventually ATT will patch upgrade but why do they care!? This is so ridic they should offer the same data plan for iphone (without voice, just as a data device), unless they are getting a kickback financially from apple for IPAD sales.

So you would pay $63 for a SIM card? You realize that would be the restocking fee. You can probably get one from AT&T if yountell them younlost your iPads SIM card, but without an iPad, how would you activate the service?

Exactly that is the question at hand. So you would have to activate it through the iphone. But would ATT give you a sim without verifying first you have an ipad or an ID of one or etc?

Bestbuy I don't think charges restocking fee. Thats obviously worst case scenario I just want the SIM card.

Or... buy iPad 3G, activate it, and sell them without simcard to international buyers  They won't need the SIM card anyway and you can fetch a profit ;)

If you see AT&T website they sell that simcard for 15 bucks but I think it's probably not activated so either way you'll still need an iPad to activate it first

Has anyone thought about doing reverse SIM switcheroo? What I mean by that is buying micro SIM adaptor, "losing" your original AT&T SIM, activating iPad's sim with adaptor in iPhone.

Hope that made sense.

Hmm activating in the iphone would be ideal, but since they are the same iphone OS, I would think you would have to hack the iphone to convince it its a ipad to enable that part of the OS on it. Then again the newer iphone OS (i'm not sure which one is on the ipad) may not be unlocked yet to change APN settings. Hmmm

Hey where on ATT site can you buy the SIM for the ipad?! I have not seen this?! Thats a good start! Ill pay the 15 for it and go from there

AT&T has a whole iPad page at

Oh thats cool I see the replacement sim! Now I just need micro adaptor and a way to activate it hmmm, I'm sure this will befigured out soon

so i put the cut sim in my ipad and change the settings to phone then when i put it back in my iphone do i have to do any thing in settings or anything special to make it work in my iphone again or no?

No, I think you misunderstood me. Here is what I meant.

1) Buy micro SIM to full SIM adaptor
2) Pull micro SIM from iPad, insert it into adaptor, insert the whole thing into iPhone.
3) Call AT&T and tell them your original SIM as been misplaced and ask them to active with new SIM (from iPad) inside.
4) ??????

Hope that made more sense.

You shouldn't because you aren't changing any settings on the SIM or phone, just changing how the iPad utilizes the SIM.

I don't believe a Full SIM would fit in the iPhone. Perhaps you mean a micro-SIM to mini-SIM adapter.

You could just buy a new SIM, with mini-SIM, containing micro-SIM. Plug it into the iPhone. Reactivate the iPhone with the new SIM via iTunes. Break out micro-SIM, an use it. There is no need to call at&t, as electrically the micro-SIM is the same as a SIM and mini-SIM, so you can always activate it via iTunes.

That's essentially what I was getting at, thanks! Now comes another question, when I reactivate with new SIM via iTunes would I be forced to extend my contract?

I put a blank sim card into my iPhone, plugged it into iTunes. I expected some type of activation screen but I got nothing. How does one force the Activation screen? AND - are we SURE the old (good) iPhone SIm will not be DE-activated upon doing this?
