I have a question that I have not seen any information on...

I have a current cell phone with at&t through my employer under a business account. I want to purchase an iphone, but want to keep my number under the business umbrela (as opposed to changing my number to a personal liability). Can I unlock the iphone just like everyone else and simply insert my current at&t business sim card? Is there any way that at&t would notice this? Could this somehow be negatively reflected on my portion of the corporate bill?

I'm pretty sure that if you are simply using the phone with AT&T, you should be able to just use any AT&T Sim card. That'd be an AT&T question, but I'm pretty sure it'd work without unlocking the phone. The only thing I could see that you'd get slammed on is if you don't have a data ability with your current business account. Data charges for the iPhone would be pretty steep without one.

Having bumps in the road?

Use the following tutorial and it should go smoothly:

http://iphone.unlock.no/

Unfortunately, I used the following and ran into a lot of bumps in the road with minicom, etc. So save yourself the headache and use the above tutorial not the following:

http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.php/How_to_software_unlock_iPhone_iUnlock

Hope that helps? I didn't search through the thread yet but was suprised I got hit up with needing a re-activation after all of this. I also have to do this using the a workaround or can I try and to do it legitimate. I guess I'll start searching through all these posts.

I wonder if someone can make an official thread for newbies on this.

I was a newbie just two days but ago but I caught on the bandwagon pretty quickly so you can too.

jail breaking the iphone is activating it and allowing files to to be written to it. you need to use independence.

independence is very self-explanatory. after this, just follow one of the tutorials posted on the OP's first post.

if you get flustered, take a break! I had to do it three times before it worked. and what sucks is that the process takes a while. if you completely give up, wait for the dev team's GUI app that will probably involve doing nothing (like IPSF's app).
I gave up. Mine crapped out while installing BSD whatever... I went into iTunes and did a complete restore to undo everything I did. It's synching now from the backup.

I'll wait for the GUI. :)

Thank you, Thank you very much....

Worked for me.

Used the following tutorial:

Checked:

Works on TMobile, NY/NJ Area
Cingular Business Plan SIM now works on the iPhone, I can finally start using my business number on the iPhone!!!! No visual VM, but who gives a rat's A$$.

I am in the same situation as yourself. My business supplies me with Cingular Business account. What I did is this, you can use the Cingular or AT&T sim card in your iphone if you hack it. Use this site http://www.hacktheiphone.net/iphone_using_cingular_for_windows.html and they have good information on how to do it.

And roaming is very expensive, so you want to avoid it with AT&T.

The only thing that would effect your business account by doing this process, is if you used data (browsing the internet via "Edge") instead of using "WiFi" because then AT&T will charge the data portion against your business account. Unless your companies account includes data with AT&T. You should verify this first just to be safe.

Thanks, timothyjay2004...
I have called att a few times to get a timeframe check on when the iphone would be available for business customers... they are always very "unsure". The only thing that they tell me is that i would have to change my account from a "corporate responsibility" to "personal responsibility" In other words I would buy an iphone and have my number changed so that I pay the bill, my company won't go for this (I would have to pay my bill) So... I was wanting try to find some way around it... so that I don't have to wait for them to get around to business plans...

Who knows!

Thanks! I'll try this.

I can connect via ssh to my phone, I can log in. But then I only can type 3 characters, then the connection is droped. My phone is activated, and jailbreaked. Also my iphone is in the DMZ, and firewalls on my computer are disabled. Any ideas? Thanks a lot guys....this is really great.

Make sure that your phone isn't going to sleep while the connection is open -- the connection is being made through WiFi, not the USB cable. Go into Settings, then General, then set Auto Lock to Never.

did you make sure that the auto-lock is set to "never"?

The modmyiphone has easy instructions. I looked over the others, and this one seemed to be the best, IMO. The only thing they should have added is more on the SFTP connection. (i used FUGU SFTP os x) It has to be

port 22
usr: root
password: dottie

Also if this helps the iunlock from their link works when activating it as an executable. For some reason i had problems with chmod +X iUnlock

Anyway... THANKS
(BTW it would be cool if you added me as it being tested :-D lol)

I find it amusing how many people try to justify doing this with claims that it is not illegal. Any reverse engineered software modification is very illegal.

People should read http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iphone.pdf before going ahead with this. When you opened your iPhone and decided to use it you agreed to this software user license, which indicates that you will not modify the software on the iPhone. This is no different from pirating a copy of an OS or using a single license version on multiple computers.

People will do whatever they want but honestly, this really shouldnt be on MacRumors and people shouldn't be advocating that it is not illegal.
