Didn't happen unless you gave them the information necessary to do it and since you claim it was a pickpocket, then of course you didn't give them the information.
On your IOS device go to Settings, iCloud, Click on your (Account) name, go to Password & Security and you should see the option for two-Factor Authentication.
Thanks for all the responses. Ive figured out how they did it - they memorized my lock screen password, then looked at my evernote for my icloud password. Ive set 2 fa for everything now. Thanks for everyone's help!!
I too have activated two step but then all my email addresses received an email from apple telling me I had done this, not just the one associated with my Id. All the email addresses are on the iPad and iPhone. Is this the reason why?

1. Dump that POS app called Evernote.
2. Start using Apple's default notes app
3. Create a new note and write all your sensitive usernames and passwords in there.
4. Lock that note with a different password and your fingerprint touch ID
I have stopped using Evernote. They recently got hacked and all hashed passwords were leaked. Then you have to pay monthly subscription to enable touch ID locking of individual notes which Apple's default app does it for free.
