Same for all MacBook series. Ridiculous price hikes for SSD and RAM. Apple knows how to milk their customers, or should I say: how to f*** with our needs?

Or they can reduce the cost of each upgrade and instead increase the base cost for everyone. That would make you happier?

Since iCloud handles my photos/video with optimize storage, the 64GB iPhone X has been plenty of storage for my needs. If I took a lot of 4K video or wanted 50 high-end games at a time, I might feel differently.

I paid for for 256 GB of storage for my iPhone X and I'm using barely over 14 GB. With Apple Music and iCloud storage, 64 GB is plenty and I'll use that extra money to upgrade to the XS Max when I'm eligible in January.

Apple keeps "price gouging" because the market tolerates it, so it's not really price gouging IMO. They're free to charge whatever they deem fit, and we as consumers have a choice to purchase. My gripes with apple typically stem from limiting consumer choice after the purchase of their devices (e.g., software downgrades on ios)

I myself don't find value at these markups, and therefore did not go ahead with my planned upgrade this year. On a side note, IOS 12 really inserted new life into my iPhone 7 which helped greatly alleviate the WANT for a new phone.

I wouldn’t call it ancillary if it was presented as a comparison in the article.

It’s not immaterial. Nvme cost more than ufs. Which makes it a material difference contrary to what you claim. Nvme has more bandwidth than ufs which is what allows the iPhone to record at 4K for longer than 5 min compared to Samsung or other android oems using cheaper ufs, which is inferior to nvme.

Again material difference with added benefits and cost, 13 cents per gb is not unreasonable.

The article states plainly that there is no difference in profits from last year. The jump is attributed to the larger size 512gb storage compared to 256 gb in last years top tier iPhone.

Perhaps you should reread the article?

Hardware is pretty black and white.

Imagine that, a better product cost more.

Well this means we can give up on ever getting an SD slot.

It truly amazes me there are so many people here who will brag about how great Apple is *because of* their high profits, when the reality is other companies simply aren't as eager to gimp their products in pursuit of the short term bottom line.

Timmy's Apple simply can't comprehend what came so naturally to Jobs, that long term customer loyalty trumps short term price gouging. Apple truly is the new Microsoft and it's only a matter of time before someone comes along and disrupts them.
I have never understood this mentality of being proud of how much money a mega corporation makes.

This is where competitors compete well with Apple. Stick it to them by offering 512GB and microSD support. These storage tiers are Apples life support.
LOL. Even Google doesn’t like SD card since what, Galaxy Nexus? Even Samsung, Sony, and Xiaomi MIUI don’t allow copying programs to SD card nowadays. Worse, many OEMs use hybrid slots forcing users to choose between SD or second SIM. SD card slot has become marketing gimmick nowadays. At least with iPhone the whole storage is accessible for apps.

And yet, Apple only gives us 5GB of iCloud space, which isn't enough to backup a single iPhone (even when turning off Photo backup and other items)

£1000 to buy the phones and the cheap b*stards don’t even give you free iCloud storage. When are they going to at least upgrade the free storage? 5GB doesn’t even cover my messages let alone everything else. Fortunately, I use Google Photos so that takes away some of the burden but it’s just shocking of Apple to be such misers. It genuinely ruins the user experience.

What is surprising isn't apple's greed, but that almost no one is surprised by it.
The iPhone Xs Max 512gb costs more than 2000$ in my country ,2000$ for a phone...

They should start at 128GB, but there’s a ton of profit in charging an extra $100 for the 256GB model.

64GB in a $1000 device is embarrassing.

Agree, but 16GB in 2015 for the 6s were way more embarrassing. 64 is a decent amount of storage, I say they should put 128GB on the Xs and Xs Max but we all know Apple.
64GB seems like a good starting storage for the Xr as it is at a different price point

I don't mind. I'm going to get the 512GB BUT stop paying for iCloud storage. So it all works out.

Frankly, though, 128GB should be standard minimum.

Flawed logic. You would be better off with a smaller size and iCloud then the other way around.

So many replies. An SD slot was NEVER in the future for iPhones. Wasn't in the past when there were less concerns about 'water proofing' why would anyone think it would be in the future?

As for Saint Steve, many forget just how expensive the original 128 K Mac was and virtually every one of his Macs that followed... or the outcry of how expensive the original iPod was, or heck the iPhone even. No... Saint Steve's motto was 'build it and they will pay." Tim is simply following in the tradition, though arguably the products are not as revolutionary. People don't know Microsoft if they think Apple is the new Microsoft. Remember the Zoom?
I remeber the Zune (WTF is a zoom?)

Nothing wrong with 64 as the base. However the problem is there is no 128 option. See my post above about Apple offering 128 GB for the Xr. They charge $50 more than the 64 GB tier.

The fact that they do not offer a 128 GB option for the XS is the single most annoying thing about this year's lineup. All other decisions Apple made, some of them fiercely criticized here, I personally think are justifiable in the sense that they serve some customers and not others. Not offering a 128 GB option does serve only Apple, as this will lead to a large number of people going for 256 GB, which in my country is $200 dollars more expensive.

At the risk of stretching my point here: If you look at the lineup, you can see it is wrong even from a purely aesthetic perspective 64 -- 256 -- 512 just feels wrong for everyone who grew up with these multiples of 8.

Need more iCloud storage? There's a solution at hand. Pay for it. Or use your own for backup.

IHS Markit analyst Wayne Lam explains that storage costs Apple about 25 cents per gigabyte

There is absolutely no way Apple pays even half of 25 ¢/GB. Apple is getting the best wholesale rate in the world for NAND at the quantities they buy in, and I can buy off Newegg right now fully assembled 480GB SSDs for $67, which comes out to 14 ¢/GB. And before you tell me that the cheap SSD probably lower quality NAND than the iPhones... maybe, but it more than makes up for it in the cost of the other components, manufacturing costs, distribution costs, the manufactuer's markup, and Newegg's markup.

If Apple was interested in serving everyone, why not offer a 128GB option in the XS? They know 64GB is too small these days so most everyone will opt for the much more expensive 256GB and 512GB options. 128GB is still a great size for many people and I predict will be the most popular option in the XR.

Complaining about paying 18x the market price for storage? Kids are so spoiled and entitled these days! I remember when the town computer was powered by waterwheels, and the whooole village had to sacrifice our first born sons to the river god every spring to get a successful boot, but after a generation we didn't have enough craftsmen to build enough wood carts to handle the storage requirements of Final Cut Pro, so we tried to switch to offerings of crops to appease the terrifying monster machine, but the giant mechanical brain just belched more soot and tar because its double floppy drives were already consuming 2/3 of the annual harvest and by then we were all tripping balls on Ergot poisoning and everybody starved to death, BUT NOBODY EVER COMPLAINED BECAUSE MEN WERE REAL MEN BACK IN THOSE DAYS and the women were too, or at least that's how I remember it.

My biggest concern is what do they do going forward?

They have now pushed the ASP up, margin stays the same last year when it had iPhone SE, I am not sure what happens this year, higher margins?

At some point this won't work any more, so if Apple made iPhone Xs Max $999 next year will Wall Street go crazy because it will lower its ASP?

One way to get around this is that Apple will have its upgrade programme worldwide, basically making iPhone as a Services model. You get an iPhone, Apple Care, iCloud Backup, all for one price. Mostly likely you will have the option to sign up for Apple Music, Apple TV and Apple Magazine as well.

Edit: If Apple were to do such a model, would they have avoided some sales tax in certain countries?
It would also have made EU model cheaper since they no longer have to include those EU consumer repair law into their cost calculation.

I know there will be decries against the evil corporate entity of Apple, but at the end of the day, if I choose to spend my money with them, and get the results I desire - i.e., a device with a terrific ownership experience, solid support, where I'm able to conduct business remotely, capture life with my beautiful family, get educated, be entertained, enjoy communicating, <insert_various_smartphone_features> - I don't care about their profit margin.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is a great point actually. I agree. I simply wish they would offer the 128GB in the XS models. I can't think of a single logical reason they couldn't offer the 128GB other than they know most people will opt for the 256GB option in the XS as 64GB is simply too small in 2018.
